i am going to purchase a 396 and currently own a 996. is there some way of programming the 396 with the current 996 files that i use?.
i am attempting to make this easy but i'm not sure it's going to happen.
i want to do the less amount of typing and programming that i can.
any advice would be helpful.
thanks.

Yes. Lot'sa posts in these forums which you can find if you use search. I use USAD, do ALL my editing on system files in the 996 files and can use them in both the 996 and 396. Just note that the 996 has a superset of features that will not be supported in the 396, like multi-site (only the first site will make it to the 396), no analog vs. digital enforcement, etc. Other editing software will generally allow cut/paste.

Separate versions, free from Uniden (separate keys, too). Load both versions up on your PC, and either configure both to point to the same SYSTEM (only) subdirectory (do NOT share the configurations) or edit your 996 system and copy to the 396 system subdirectory. Get into the habit of using the 996 as master for editing systems and you'll be fine (again, keep in mind feature limitations). You'll still have to use the appropriate program to load the systems and configurations into the separate units. Also works for BCT15, but again, with the limitations of features.

I wish Butel made it that easy. With the ARC stuff I can only go from 396 to 996 (and of course the 996 is the one with the superset of functions so it would be nice to go the other way.)

I am considering switchng to scan control, but havent done it yet - anyone recommend doing so?

After you install the BCD396T software, make the following change to point to the BCD996T systems folder. That will make all of the systems common between both.

In BCD396T UASD, under 'Setup' > 'Setup Options' > 'Data Base'
change the 'System Database Folder' to:

C:\My Documents\UASD_DataBase\BCD996T\UASD_systems

I share the same system files with multiple BCT15, BCD396T, and BCD996T scanners.
