Lots of confusion here. ftp.homepatrol.com resolves to 69.15.51.147 when querying OpenDNS and Google's public DNS servers:

Code:
C:\WINDOWS\system32>nslookup ftp.homepatrol.com 208.67.222.222
Server: resolver1.opendns.com
Address: 208.67.222.222

Non-authoritative answer:
Name: ftp.homepatrol.com
Address: 69.15.51.147

C:\WINDOWS\system32>nslookup ftp.homepatrol.com 8.8.8.8
Server: google-public-dns-a.google.com
Address: 8.8.8.8

Non-authoritative answer:
Name: ftp.homepatrol.com
Address: 69.15.51.147

Try pointing your browser to ftp://ftp.homepatrol.com or click that link and it should prompt you to login. From what I've seen in your data, it's not a routing or ISP issue.

Further, the hosts file @Ubbe suggests is incorrect, as it uses the wrong hostname. Do you have any firewall software installed on your computer that limits various applications?

Belvdr, I can successfully reach the login prompts at homepatrol. I do have Windows Defender firewall, but I turned it off temporarily and ran the Sentinel database download. The software still timed out. Am I the only one in the world having this problem?

Is this a laptop? If so can you haul it to a McDonalds or Library- somewhere with WiFi? and try?

Can you screenshot the error

I've had terrible problems with one low cost isp small company that said they did not block any ports and still when running open port scanner it indicated that some vital ports I where trying to use where blocked. And sure enough, after a very long time of persuation and showing evidence they claim they did nothing but the ports opened up.

This sounds like a an issue with Sentinel. If you've reinstalled, I'm not sure what you can do.

This is not an ISP or connection issue.

Also, ensure you are installing the latest Sentinel.

Another test is, using your browser, go to ftp://ftp.homepatrol.com and login with the username homepatrolftp and password ****** (case sensitive for both). If you see a directory listing, it is definitive there's no issue with your ISP or the connection to the FTP server.

It's not a connection problem but a timeout problem during a file transfer. The timeout happens after 10 seconds. I believe Sentinel is using the standard Microsoft FtpWebRequest class which has a default timeout of 10 seconds. I believe the problem to be elsewhere than Sentinel. The engineers at Uniden could increase the timeout but that may mask the problem.

For a test try this link. It has nothing to do with Sentinel as you know and may or may not be concussive. If it timeouts, advise your ISP.
Speed Test

I got to it by googling "ftp test download speed"

I cannot connect to that Greek site to FTP. The timeout using Chrome timeout is far longer than 10 seconds, though. I have created a bald spot on my head from scratching :). Thanks again to everyone for trying.

I got to the login sceen, entered the data you privided, and it timed out after 10 seconds, with no login occurring.

Interesting. On a whim, have you reset your router lately? If you have and it still does not work, then another call to your ISP is in order.

I would love to see a network trace but that can be very confusing for someone not used to doing so and it could reveal other sensitive information if you're not careful.

Let us know the results of the test at another location.

In the mean time, you could probably find either a very cheap VPN service, or a free one, that should be able to resolve the FTP correctly and get you connected to the updated DB.

When I get to my computer later today, I’ll provide details, unless someone beats me to it.

Open your windows defender security center, and click on "Firewall & network protection" Which of the 3 "networks" shown is listed as active?

If you're using a wireless connection, it's easy to click "public network" by accident when you first connect. This can limit some activities you'll be able to do. Despite temporarily disabling your firewall, you may need to add it as an exception. You can do that by clicking "Allow an app through the firewall"

One thought no one has mentioned.....but have you tried disabling your antivirus as well? This only applies to 3rd party antivirus software as some also has a form of network protection(malwarebytes for example).

Tom's Guide: Best Free VPN Services

Sounds like WindScribe is your cheapest (free) and best interim solution.

In a nutshell... Register for WindScribe's free package. Install WindScribe and sign into their VPN.
Then try doing the Uniden Sentinel DB update.
Once done - disconnect from the VPN.

A VPN is a "Virtual Private Network". What it's going to do is put your computer's network, on a different network. What that means is you won't be able to access anything on your local network (i.e. your local network printer, other computers, or your router/modem's DNS).
What this will do for you though, is leverage WindScribe's DNS servers and hopefully allow you to hop/resolve everything properly. I suggest removing the hosts file entry you made earlier.

Looking for help with Sentinel updates. I have removed and reloaded the Sentinel program with version 10. I get a timeout/cannot connect to server message when attempting to updated either the firmware or the database. I have been able to do this effortlessly for a couple of years. Just the past month or so it times out after about 10 seconds. I called Uniden and they really had no idea how to find the problem.

kyt4062,

By any chance is your internet setup DSL? In the past it was common for DSL users to have to reset the MTU setting in their router from 1500 to 1492 to make FTP work. In some unusual cases the MTU had to be reset to 1452.

If you aren't using DSL, just ignore this message.

There's some issue here with higher # ports being blocked. The initial FTP connection and login happens on port 22, but then essentially every command after is going to happen on a port above 1024. I'd bet anything that in the browser example he is logging in OK, then the subsequent LIST command is where it's hanging.

For reference, it is port 21 for the initial contact. Port 20 is used for a control channel to let the client know which high port is used for data. In passive mode, the client initiates the connection on the high port. It is pretty standard these days and Sentinel also makes use of passive mode.

Yes I got the port # wrong but it remains that the higher number port is the probably the problem. Also the control channel is port 21, port 20 is the data channel for active transfers, ports > 1024 for passive.
