Ever since I got my BCD996P2 several months ago, it's been like pulling teeth to get it to connect to the computer. However, by jumping around and trying one comm port after another I've always been able to get it going. No More. No matter what I try it just won't connect. Any suggestions? Am using the usb cable that came with the scanner. Thanks

Are you using any sort of USB hub - or using a direct connection to the computer?
Start there.

Also, look in device manager - is there any yellow triangles?
In device manager, delete every comm port and let the machine re-P&P them.

Which computer operating system are you using?

Windows, Mac, Chrome book, other? Which version of the operating system?

No hub, direct connection. No yellow flags. Uninstalled the comm ports. Rebooted. Won't connect to the new ports. Firmware up to date. I clicked on the link to update the serial to USB driver but did not see the device listed in device manager. Windows 11 version 22 H2.

Usually when something stops working by itself in Windows, it is due to a windows update.

There's an electronic device in the cable that should signal to windows that it wants a serial port assign to it. It does that without any scanner connected. Windows device control panel should indicate that a serial port number have been assign when you connect the cable and you have loaded the proper driver for it. Each USB port has its own driver so try another USB port.

I thought maybe the trouble could have been caused by the latest update. I unplugged the serial port cable then plugged it back in again and it assigned comm port 3. Still won't work. Properties said best driver is installed. I've tried a good many of them: 1, 3, 4, 7, 8, but still won't work.

Did you power cycle the scanner? If rebooting the computer too then power cycle the scanner after the computer finishes booting up.

As for computer port, only one I see is 24 pin.

Unplug any USB devices. Reboot, leaving them unplugged. When the computer is booted, open device manager. Look and open the com ports line and see what shows. Next, open the USB line. With that open, plug in the 996P2 while the 996 is turned on and watch the USB tree, a new device should show up (you may also hear a ding). If it doesn't, in the device Mgr top menu bar, have it scan for new hardware.

Any change under USB devices? Go back to the COM ports, any change there?

If no change, unplug the 996 from the USB port and plug somthing like a flash drive in it. Does the device manager show the device you plugged in? If yes, the problem is drivers, the cable or 996 itself. If you get nothing when you plug in the flash drive (or whatever you plugged in) the problem is with your computer USB port.

If device Mgr sees the 996, but there is a yellow triangle by it, you are missing a driver. Click on the device have windows search for a driver. If it finds a driver, does a new com port show up? If so, your 996 should be on that com port... Try your software.

I unplugged the cable and tried it again. Assigned comm 3 again. Said best driver installed. Finally, this time it worked. Thanks all for your help. Must have been caused by the latest windows update. At least now I've got an idea on how to go about fixing it. Thanks again.
