I was advised to post this in this forum since I live in South Dakota. Here goes. I have a Radio Shack Pro-106 that I believe I have programmed correctly. I entered in the frequencies for the three towers that are closest to my area, which is Todd County. I then entered several objects and have been scanning, but I am not hearing anything. To my understanding, the South Dakota State Radio System runs as an APCO-25, and I believe that the Pro-106 is supposed to be able to hear transmissions on that type of a system. But mine hasn't. Any help would be appreciated.

Did you set it up as a MOT VHF/UHF system and did you program the 3 Custom Frequency Tables also?

I have not programmed them and am not to aware of what the Frequency Tables are. But I do know how to find the setting option on the scanner.

I'm not sure what it's going to ask for as far as ChLo and ChHi if it does try these:

LoCh 380 HiCh 435 Offset 380 Base Freq 155.4150 Step 15.0
LoCh 436 HiCh 453 Offset 436 Base Freq 157.2000 Step 12.5
LoCh 454 HiCh 759 Offset 454 Base Freq 157.4700 Step 15.0

Ans see if that helps.

After entering the information into the T-Table section, I began to hear a few transmissions from a state interoperability object, but nothing else from local agencies. Also, when I entered in the conventional frequency for our local law enforcement (which is sometimes used), I was able to hear units in the field, but wasn't able to hear the dispatcher as it sounded like it was scrambled. Is it possible that our local system could be encrypted? Or is it because I am not doing something right?

They could be running some kind of encryption, or if it was P25 and sounded like a broken up cellphone call then chances are you weren't receiving it strong enough to fully decode also.

I would program the scanner with a computer if your not already, then download from RadioReference through the software, selecting the towers in your area and the talkgroups you want to listen to. Radioshack calls them Objects, i just helped program a Pro-197 this week and was truely annoyed how they descibed stuff in the manual, coming from Uniden scanners all my life pretty much, they just lost me in terms.

Not living in SD maybe a local can help with that. Do you have the frequencies (Control Channels) programed in for the tower that is closest to your location and your local Talk Groups. At least your hearing things now, that's a start.

I wish I could use all of that online stuff to program it, but I don't have a PC/IF cable. Since my last post, I have heard the local EMS, but nothing else. I'm beginning to think that our law enforcement has an encrypted system.

I am not aware of any encrypted talk groups on the states digital system, but I have been wrong before. I just bought a pro-197(desktop version of the 106) over thanks giving. I too was having problems scanning the states digital system. I was using a pro-2096(predecessor to the 197) to scan, and it worked fine on it.

The best way to get this thing to work is download win500, and get a programing cable for it. I think the cable costs around $20.00. You need to have flex step checked in win500, and the extended table setup like the previous post to get it to work correctly.

Mine was showing that it was decoding the control channel (the big T on the display), and the talk groups would pop up when used, but I was getting no audio. I had the custom table programed correctly, but was still not getting anything. Once I checked flex step, it was like night and day.

Is the Radio Shack USB Cable the one I need to program the Pro-106? I'm planning on buying it off of Scannermaster for $34.00.

I don't know of any purely encrypted talkgroups, but the SWAT talkgroup in Sioux Falls carries a mixture of encrypted and unencrypted. My understanding is that some radios have two transmit buttons; one for encrypted, one for unencrypted. During SWAT events, you can hear both. Perhaps audio is better unencrypted - or perhaps there is less of a delay. Otherwise why wouldn't the talkgroup be encrypted all the time?

Got some new info. The states system does have some encrypted capable talk groups. To be encrypted they must put the encrypt button on the radio. Swat does have that capability. The state patrol also has some supervisor talk groups that use encryption. I suppose they do, because all state patrol cars are equipped with a Pro-2096 digital scanner.

Yep there is some encrypted talkgroups, but none that are that active or necessary to monitor anyway. Well at least in my opinion.

Programmed my Pro-106 using the USB cable, turned on the Flex Step option (as recommended) but still nothing. I thought that maybe the PD dispatch's object number wasn't listed on RR, so I turned on the wildcard like I had it before, but I can't hear them. I've also tried the conv that's listed for them. I've come to the conclusion that they're encrypted.

I'm using PSREdit500 and I programmed the Todd County talkgroup using the three nearest towers and their CCs. I have also entered in the custom frequency tables, which I have listed below.

Lo 380 Hi 435 Offset 380 Base 155.4150 Step 15.0
Lo 436 Hi 453 Offset 436 Base 157.2000 Step 12.5
Lo 454 Hi 759 Offset 454 Base 157.4700 Step 15.0
