Carnival Cruise Lines-No Ham Radio Allowed

Why is it so difficult for some people to accept and abide by anothers rules? The cruise lines lawyers and admin have determined that in the best interest of passengers, crew members, staff and ship operations that certain guidelines be followed regardless of what you think about it. Ham operators and scannists are not the ones who have to answer to whatever the reasoning behind the decisions, so just move on.

Yet, FRS and GMRS are the most likely to interfere with the Ships Frequencies.

Altho it could be the ship doesn't want to be Party to any Amateurs improperly operating
in a foreign country .....w/o asking for permission...

and what is ironic about their on-board sale of FRS/GMRS bubble packs is:

-they are only supposed to be used in USA and Canada
-GMRS requires an FCC or IC (Canada) license to operate

If you are a GMRS licensee you know that cruise ships are some of the worst pirate users of GMRS channels. Ironic how they cite they are concerned about "interference to their radios" but have no problem assisting others potentially interfering with licensed GMRS users.

In the end they do have the right to restrict whatever they allow on their ships. The option you have is to not board one if you don't like their rules.

You forgot Mexico. I have never spent the time to search for one, but apparently there is a FRS Radio certified for US / Canada and Mexico
and that is the only one Mexico [altho it is the same freq's etc] will allow, legally

My wife and I cruised in march 09 and used our GMR1558-2CK onboard (CH 14) to keep track of each other when apart. Now it was mainly one in the cabin and one out on ship and mainly at night but we did "get away" with it. Was not aware of the ban! Oooops!

Yep. Radios that are used in Mexico have a Cofetel ID (CFT / CFT ID) and have to be 14 channels and 0.5W. FRS/GMRS radios are "illegal" in Mexico, no one really cares, you won't get stopped to have the radio inspected, but selling 22 channel radios is illegal in Mexico.

A Very Short reply, and not signed [means standard line of CRAP] from Carnival was returned with

"Due to security reasons and the possible interference with the ship's communications, amateur radios are not permitted on board."

I replied about FRS/GMRS on-board and being sold in the same band, vs the amateur and requested to be directed to someone who drafted or had input into this ODD rule.

I looked at that link, and ya know what else is odd? They allow boom boxes and the like "with headphones", yet these can cause interference to the ship's comms as well if the VFO isn't in proper repair.

I can give an update in mid- September. I am going on a Carnival Cruise in late August. I plan on bringing 2 Motorola DTR 550's, a FRS radio and a scanner. I have never had any issues with Carnival, though I never sit on the sun deck playing with radio gear, I do it from the balcony in my room.

When I go on cruises I enjoy the ship. If I want to talk to someone I talk to my family not to a radio. Bringing a Ham radio on a cruise ship is like bringing your cell phone and yapping on it. Isn't the point of a cruise to get away and relax? Give your family a break. What's next, someone wants to bring their CB and can't?

Each to their own. It's called a Hobby for that reason and each of us bring a different perspective and interest to the Hobby.

Some folks have a hobby of taking Pictures, but when on a Cruise they don't leave the radios at home, so why should I leave my Radios at home

i am going on the carnival triumph from august 10th through 15th. i can bring my scanner onboard or they going to give me problems when i board the ship.

i dont know but i had my scanner confiscated when i was boarding the ship from the stop at halifax. he said never again and sounded like he super pissed at me

maybe they think i am some sort of criminal, hey maybe i am now banned from carnival.
carnival states that no ham radios allowed on board.
i did get it back from the security officer just before i disembarked from the ship this morning.

I just got off the Carnival Sensation this morning. I carried aboard 2 Motorola DTR 550's, 1 Kenwood FRS and 1 Trisquare eXRS . The FRS was busy on a handful of channels and I used my DTR's interference free. The only hassle I got was from airport security who hand checked my bag each way and swabbed it for bombs (lol). They also took my shaving cream and bottle of rum I bought in the Bahamas. But hey, you have to be nice to them otherwise they can ruin your day. I had no problems using the DTR's on board the ship. Many people openly carried FRS/GMRS.

Just take off the antenna so it doesn't look obvious on the X-ray. I did this and they never checked or asked a question. I also only used it in my room on the balcony. I never openly carried it around.
