Do any of you guys carry hand held scanners around? Im going on a mini vacation where there is a mile of road and there are shops up and down each side ... This town has a Police Department and such...

Im wondering if carrying a hand held scanner with ear buds would be worth it ....

Conceal and Carry

I go for a walk after I get home from work and I take a HT and ear-buds with me just to listen. It is pretty active at 1-2am but this is a town of 24,000. So I have done it but it may not be that active depending on the size of the town.

I generally carry my HAM HT (Yaesu Ft270) with a handful of key frequencies (State Police, Sheriff and city) that take advantage of the wideband receive. If I've got to wait around for something for a while it's a nice way to pass the time, but I've actually found it distracting if I'm doing something.

I have mine on me most of the time, whether walking or driving. I try to keep it out of site when Officers come by. They are legal to have, but I don't want to draw attention to it in case some of them wouldn't appreciate me having it. I was stopped by the locals one time and he saw in in the seat next to me and mentioned if I was riding around listening to what was going on. I said yes. I DID notice he called in my tags on his cell though. He gave me absolutely NO trouble though.

As far as carrying it here and there on vacation, I don't get much out of listening if I am not familier with the area of which they are talking.

I carry my Pro-106 everywhere and even have an antenna installed on my car and a charger and cable to play it through the car stereo. I've walked by cops on the street and they didn't say anything and one time I pulled over to call the cops about a child wandering the streets unattended and the cops noticed my antenna and were looking in my car and stuff asking what I had it plugged into lol. I answered honestly and told them a police scanner and they just kinda laughed and shook their heads. It is illegal to carry around here, but they really don't care.
