all the fire/rescue use fairly plain language in carteret county...sheriff and pd's use regular national 10 codes when not using plain english, too....we're just simple country folk :)

(in neighboring Onslow Co, the rescue will use an elaborate code system for their rescue calls (mostly for logging) and then immediately give a plain language verbal description !!! kinda defeats the purpose of any verbal encryption--HI HI !! )

Onslow County uses EMD/AMPDS codes for EMS dispatch. A somewhat outdated list of these can be found here: http://www.fordyce.org/scanning/scanning_info/scfcodes.html

Until I found out about this I thought it was a form of verbal encryption too.

That's a great list. Once again, I'll have a new EMD list on my desk at work.

Way out there...
Marine Freqs/ Channels used in Carteret

Sorry it took so long to reply back to your Carteret County question, as far as marine band, and USCG monitoring, I searched the CG out on a 164 Mhz freq last year but could not write it down in time. It was mostly training stuff, or so it sounded like. The US Fish & Wildlife has a repeater, supposedly, at the Cedar Island Wildlife Refuge, ties in to the Mattamuskeet USF&W office. They have a VHF repeater system with five sites in eastern NC, they use to be on 163.150 but apparently changed frequencies when they went APCO-25. Does anybody down there know the new frequencies?
Here is what I monitor on the VHF Marine channels/frequencies every year from Atlantic Beach and Carteret County:
Ch 6-156.300 Diamond City Tours (Mule Train Tours @Cape Lookout / Lookout Express)
Ch 7-156.350 Sand Dolar Ferry (Harkers Island)
Ch 8-156.400 Town Creek Marina
Ch 9-156.450 Beaufort Docks
Ch 10-156.500 Portside Marina / Scoby Diving
Ch 12-156.600 Seatow
Ch 13-156.650 Beaufort Bridge (all DOT Draw bridges)
Ch 16- 156.800 Distress (USCG Group Ft Macon)
Ch 18-156.900 Captain Stacy FIshing Charters
Ch 22A-157.100 USCG Notice to Mariners (Group Ft Macon)
Ch 23-157.150 USCG Group Fort Macon (often encrypted)
Ch 66-156.325 Morris Kabins & Ferry (Atlantic, NC)
Ch 68-156.425 Most marinas called here; Atlantic Beach docks (call here, switch to 71 after contact)
Ch 69-156.475 Harkers Island Fishing Center
Ch 71-156.575 Atlantic Beach Fishing Charters
Ch 72-156.625 Fishing Tournaments & Spooners Creek Marina
Ch 79-156.97t Calico Jacks Ferry & Pony Express tours (Harkers Island)
CH 83- USCG Group Ft Macon
Of course these are subject to change, depending on interference but have been consistent over the past ten years. I was checking out prices for the fishing charters and noticed or ask what channel they were using, they usually will tell you.
A few years back at ncwaterman.com, they had a live marine radio over the internet, but they took it off the air. If anyone down there wants to put another VHF radio feed live via the net, please let me know, I enjoy listening to those.

Hope this helps with your question.

Just for a heads up, the reason some comm center dispatch protocols use the AMPDS codes first is to indicate for the audio record how the initial call is entered into the CAD and so that the run crews can get a head start on the run report, followed by plain language because they all know not everyone responding can remember what all the AMPDS codes are anyway. :D It's for the CYA factor that the audio record and the CAD entry agree with the run report paperwork. In comm classes, it's called "consistency in dispatch procedures," AKA "scripting." Any necessary changes and corrections are made in the appropriate sections of report paperwork and the CAD followup.

you take two years to check your thread ? :-(

Emerald Isle is self dispatched (this may or may not change) on their own freq, and the only users of their freqs, so you really don't need tone out info---there's nobody else on freq to block out.

and Viper is not yet being used by FD or PD here at all.....only SHP.

No changes to carteret... They appear to be experimenting with VIPER but just about everything is on VHF still... Only good thing is that the coastal VIPER sites have awesome coverage so do not be surprised to pick up some distant towers and unusual users. Here in Richlands, I get Hyde SO/EMS on a regular basis with a PSR-500/600.

Yes I am still alive
Your mileage may vary with reception...

Ok going back to the beach, I see there is a new dispatch center for the county. Has Emerald Isle and the others moved to this?

Any more use of VIPER in the county?

And does any one have the tone outs for fire dispatch yet?

Thanks again

Carteret has a new consolidated dispatch center, which is now the sole communications for the county and the several cities/towns .

Some use of VIPER, although most traffic is still VHF.

I am trying to get them, but have been unable, with luck perhaps someone else can.

Hope this helps.
