• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

I'm looking for a kit that'll allow me to install the male end on a CB cable. What kit would you recommend and how difficult is it (kit) to use. Also, the end plug itself, are they compression types or some other type, and are these male ends sold separately? Are there videos that'll show how to use the kits on the web. I'm new to all this CB stuff, just learning.

Are you talking about the coax connector, for the antenna? If so, that is a PL-259, and there are plenty of options for installing new ones.

I purchased a Solarcon A99 antenna for my Cobra 29 CB that I'm using for a base station. I then purchased about 100 feet of 95-14400 RG8X to go from my antenna to another shorter cable that goes through a wall in my den, then into the back of my CB. In the process of negotiating the wall next to the CB, the male connector of the shorter cable came off. So I'm going to follow one of those videos on youtube by going to Radio Shack and purchasing another male end, some solder, a soldering gun and attach a connector onto the bear end of the short cable coax.
Thank you for the assistance.
Great web site - I can see I'll be back a lot. Good subjects to learn by.

Go to a hardware store that sells cable by the foot, and buy a few feet of coax, and practice on that piece. That way you do not trash the coax you plan on using.

If you are using solder connectors, which is the best kind, use a high heat gun, not a 35 watt pencil iron. I personally use a 250 watt gun. Also be sure to use rosin core solder, not acid core (plumbers solder). Be sure to have some way to hold the connector while you are soldering it. It will get hot!!!.

If you have not done a connector before, practice, as suggested is the first step. Be very careful stripping the insulation off the coax. If you even nick the shield braid, one of those tiny strands can come loose and short the connector and make your radio a brick. When you strip the center wire you also need to be careful as a nick there can lead to an open connection.

The more I read about this, the more inclined I am to contact a local guy who does a lot of CB and Ham radio stuff. He's a business that doesn't live that far from me, nice guy too. In fact, I bought a small Wilson magnet antenna for my vehicle from him and he was more than helpful.

Get forum. Learned a lot by "sandbagging" as I've heard others on the CB talk about operators that just listen in. Great hobby. I should enjoy it.

Thank you for your help.

A wise choice. I have been building kits (Heath Kits and Knight Kits to start) for over 50 years. Even experienced builders make mistakes, and they can be costly.

here there and everywhere
pick up a ham book and it will give you drawings and illustrations on how to put on a cb connector or this might help https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ABO45xFZCv8 remember to check your work with an ohm meter strands of ground can get stuck and cause a short as soon as connector is on do a check from center to tip you should hear no beep both on the connector beep if get a beep from the outside connector to the tip you have a short and the connector will have to be reinstalled and cleaned.
