not sure where this one should be so..... here ya go.

yrs a nd yrs ago my old man used to drive a big rig tankers, he had a few nice CB units.

now I remember, he had a special Mic with a button on it (other than the talk button, it actually had 2 buttons on it) he always was sneeking in and out of his truck because he said it could get him in trouble to have in some states.

I was a kid and I didnt know nothing, I still dont know squat about BC sets other than its a 2 way radio everyone used to used alot.

What was this mic he was always smuggling around and what did it do? he called it a power mic, or a zapper or some such thing.

I ask because I saw one in a second hand shop the other day and I haven't sen one in many many yrs.

Was my old man just stupid (he is actually) or was he actually packing around some secret trucker CB radio weapon?

I was quite active in CB back in the day until the airwaves started filling up with a bunch of mentally unstable types. The only two really special types of Mics were power mikes to boost modulation and they would often have a slider control on them to set the modulation level. And then there were what were referred to as "Roger Beep" type mikes that would send a particular little tone at the end of each transmission. The latter were quite annoying in my opinion and were not legal in the 11 Meter Citizen Band.

Are you able to take and post an image. It may help.

It was probably a mic with a built-in "noise toy" that played sound effects.

And yes, he was being paranoid by sneaking it in and out of his truck.

No they weren't illegal, lots of HAMs and CBers used them. I used the Astatic D109 handheld and desk mics for a long time. Finally switched when I found this nice dual connection base mic, allowed me to connect it to 2 different radios at the same time with separate gain controls for each connection.

The mics are not illegal, but their use could be if it caused over-modulation, or is used to make noise for no purpose.

Hi y'all good buddies <yuch>,

>>power mikes to boost modulation and they would often have a slider control on them to set >>the modulation level.

"YEAH that was what it had! I remember now."

The Turner +3 comes to mind, had a light blue case with an off white face and a slide pot at the top rear.

"were these things illegal or something."

No.

"or was he just being a tough guy in his ignorance?"

No, sneaking around for some reason not related to CB if you get my drift.

N_Jay, the audio section in the average CB is incapable of much if any overmodulation they're so underpowered. 90% of the splatter comes from strong IMD products caused by over driving the speech amp. Then too it's not the superfluous chip inside the mic making silly noises, it's the superfluous Chip holding it.

Note to Jersey truckers; learn to speak English before attempting a Texas accent. Y'all sound like Gee Dubya with a hint of Hillary.
