Just for those interested, I jumped over on the CCNC site this afternoon and there is a notice dated 9-13-07 that they will not post any rebanding schedule, etc. on their website due to "public safety concerns". I guess that they must be paranoid since the techs are running around in "stelth" encryption mode.

That's interesting. I fail to see what they are accomplishing by doing that. Encrypting the radio techs' talkgroups baffles me too (unless they are discussing encryption keys or anything of that sort - I've never listened to the techs before, so I wouldn't know). We are going to figure out when a site has rebanded and what frequency it has rebanded to. Can anyone help me understand their reasoning?

Hmm....let's see....bad guys may want to know when a site will be down for rebanding to commit a crime while the system is down and responses probably delayed. Yes, this is a slim possibility, but why chance it?

They made a good decision - only those who need to know....need to know.

Personally, I like that they encrypted the radio technicians talk groups because information about system-sensitive topics, such as outages and problems, is communicated over these groups. This information could potentially be utilized incorrectly by people with less than good judgement. For a few dollars per radio for a handful of radios, it only made sense.

The public must be safer with less information. I wish I could pay more taxes.

You too! I love to pay more taxes, who wouldn't want to?

I think the paranoia runs rampant these days and you give the criminals too much credit.

A lot of things can be used in a lot of bad ways. I don't personally care about the Schedule. It just cracks me up when people are so paranoid. It's also a function of people believing that what they work on is the most important thing there is (human nature).

If I was a criminal, I would just call in a fake big call on the other side of the jurisdiction. That would be about the same effect and easier than looking on the web for planned radio outages. And good thing no one can hear about those crazy radio problems anymore. Someone might write a best seller about them.

Sure sounds like you do care, even though you don't claim to.

Anyway, it makes sense to be cautious. Caution is good.

It keeps people from being armchair quarterbacks after something really does happen.
