To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

So, for some background, I am looking into recording a fireground channel, that is non repeated. I am thinking of using the pinout to plug into the mobile, and get a feed of the audio into a mini computer, has anyone ever done this with an APX Mobile, or even a HT/XTL model mobile? If so, any tips?

I've recorded off a Motorola radio using a Zoom H2n connected to the low-level audio output pins on the accessory connector; worked like a charm.

I wouldn't fool around with a mini-computer; just get a portable recorder like a Zoom H2n or equivalent. If you need to record on the fireground, just hit the record button before you leave the truck and let it run. Use the largest SD card it will take so you don't run out of recording space.

The only thing you'll need to worry about is the legalities involved; using an unofficial recording source could cause problems if you ever had to take the recording to court. Wouldn't hurt to consult the city law director or county prosecutor for advice.

Does anyone know of the wire used for audio to the pins on the back? I am thinking of just adding the pins in for the external audio to the already in accessory port, just don't want to mess anything up. Is there a specific thing I can buy thats premade wire that I can then put into an audio jack?

I’m also thinking of through an O5, having an AUX button that when you click it it will start the recording. Is the VIP out correlated to the Aux things?

XTL --> microswitch --> VOX recording device. This would be the physical way I would do it, but I would (preferentially) control recording thru the recording device (software/UI)

I never liked using a radio to enable recording control of something, it's not best suited for that job.

There is a special audio interface cable made by Motorola which plugs into the back of the control head and provides line level RX and TX audio for recording. I seem to remember the Astro Siren having this built in to the micro-control head (not the DEK) as well.
