Re:
A lot of good ideas but I don't think any of them would work in a manner which the thread originator had in mind, which is the live dissemination of noteworthy news. The AIM / Yahoo instant messenger is fine, except you can only contact one person at a time unless you create a group that everyone you try and get to join actually joins. Not the best. The Tavern is good, but only for those who happen to be clicking refresh when something happens.
It would not be very hard to create an irc chat network. Using Unreal IRC chat software which is free, on a remote linux based provider, they could have a live chat system up and running in no time. All they would need to do is add a java applet to their home page pointing it to the IRC chat server and everyone here could connect. Anyone who is interested could easily connect to it just by simply using the java applet. The cost to radioreference would be to have someone host the chat server. Maybe they can do it themselfs? If it is a cost they could limit it to premium subscribers, to help offset the costs.
I have offered to Lindsay to help volunteer to setup / oversee such a project, as I have run my own IRC network in the past, and he was not interested at the time for the reasons stated here. It seems they use to have one that was not used, so he did not seem interested in starting another one. Maybe if enough people show an interest, they will bring it back?
