To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Anyone have one of these radios? I have a TH-F6A and a VX-6, but I was thinking of getting the 144/220 version of the Wouxon. Just curious if it's worth the throwaway price.

I don't personally have one but do have a couple of buddies who do. They like them and they sound good on both transmit & receive. Most of the eham reviews rate them a good value.

I just got my 144/222 version a few hours ago and been playing around with it. I also have the 144/440 version and I am having fun with them both. It's a bit of a learning curve to start, but once you get the hang of it, it's second nature. So many people are intimidated by menu driven radios. These are menu driven, but in a less expensive way. Download the manual and read it several times before you make a purchase, you have to translate it a little bit to understand it.

Very happy with it. Even though the 220 is only 1.5 watts, I have no problem with the couple of 220 machines near me. Solid radio. If you got the money to burn, get the SU 1 barometric unit. Just another toy for the radio!

I have both the 220 and 440 version and they are well worth the price. I would also recommend getting the programming cable that will make setting up your rig a breeze. I am on the list to get one of the new mobiles when they arrive from Riceland.

Definitely worth the price. I've got the KG-UVD1P 2 mtr / 70 cm version and it's the best handheld I've ever owned (not that I've owned all that many). Solid construction and clear audio. Mine came with the programming cable and programming software, so for around $115 it was a great all around value.

:)

I'm not much of a hand-held fan. For what I use a radio for, there's just mot much call to have one. The deciding factors with the Wouxun radios was the price and the Part-90 certification. I figure the price made a bigger difference than the Part-90 thingy. So, I bought a KG-UV2D.
I knew from checking opinions that the programming software would be a good idea (at least for me). I just wish I'd have ordered the cable with the radio, wouldn't have had to learn how to do things from the buttons. I also have problems with the big 'name's programming so Wouxun isn't particularly 'worse' in that regard.
All thing considered, it's a good deal for me, your milage may vary. Naturally there are a couple of things that 'they' should have asked me about before production! The 'lady' who talks to me about settings on the radio could have had a southern accent instead of Chinese. Who knowz, she may be southern Chinese? I don't know about you, but I could have done with out the FM broadcast bad, and that 'flashlight'. I don't plan to disable either one, but a 'flashlight' on a radio? Oh well...

I've seen these radios at a couple of hamfests, packaged with the cable and program disk, and a 'T' shirt. I think I miss not having the 'T'-shirt.

I had the wouxun 2m/440 and loved it till i broke the screen on it, not a radio problem, my truck tire problem, didnt know i dropped it an drove over it. I replaced it with a TYT dual bander and wish i would have gotten a new Wouxun. The TYT is good for what it is, but i just liked the wouxun better.

I had the Wouxon 144/440 version. It was ok but I eventualy got rid of it. For the price, you cannot beat them. An all inclusive package pretty much for just over a c-note. The audio both on TX and RX is very good. The back light is nice and bright. There are just some things you have to work around. For example, in order to go from VFO to memory mode, you have to go into the menu system, no single button press like on the Ham radio portables. Second, it is NOT a dual receive radio, just dual display. Some people might find little details like that anoying, some might not. It's really up to you. I got rid of mine after about 6 months because it became a pain in the rear to me to operate vs my VX-7R, lets say. But for the money, if you don't mind a few extra key presses, get one!

I don't have it handy to check, but can't you go from Mem. to Freq. by pressing that 'TDR' button? Or is it the 'A/B' and 'TDR' buttons together? Or am I thinking about something else all together? (This has been a good day. You can tell, right?)

It's always a good idea to learn the radio and not jump on the software straight away. You never know when you will go somewhere and have to program something on the fly. I got the software and cable with my original purchase of the 144/440 radios but didn't run the software for a few hours after spending quality time learning the functions. I then went to the software and ended up loading a full 128 memories. After I got the 144/222 version I did the same with it. I like them and my back order of 1700 mAH batteries have just shipped out. I have no problems with mine.

It's MENU>TDR to switch between Memory mode and VFO mode and back.

I've got one and love it. I just upgraded to an FT-8800R in the car so this will be given to my wife when she gets her Technician's in March.

For the money I'd say you can't go wrong with it. I'd have a few gripes from a software programming standpoint but that's it.

I used mine with a little Diamond Mag Mount and it works awesome. I hit a repeater from about 25 miles away 2 weeks ago with good signal.

Anyone messed around with the "Blackbox" brand Chicom radios? I've seen them on ebay. The manuals are in Chinglish but was wondering if they were as good as what some of you have reported on here.

Never heard of them till you mentioned them. After doing a search for them, I see there really is a radio with that 'name'. Considering the new price, and the specifications for them, I see no reason to think they would be comparable to the Wouxun HTs in price or abilities. That certainly doesn't mean that they are 'junk', just not all that desirable from my perspective. Not much help, huh?

Why would we say that we liked them if they sucked?

IDK what you mean.

Thanks Doc. They were at one time almost $75 or so cheaper than they are now. I noticed them while searching around for some public safety gear for a department vehicle I was working on. I found it interesting it uses VFO and is supposedly type-accepted in public safety application while using ham-esque vfo and covers those bands as well. I was considering one as a base station dual bander but now that the price has gone up I'm not sure it's worth it beings that it's such an unknown.
