• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

The survey was quite limited in scope. The question with an order of importance never mentioned SSB ,FM nor a base station
while being over focused on USB ports and Blue tooth Microphones.
Single 20-30 year olds are not into CB and you will never get them to bite !

Yes we want SSB and FM and A frequency counter and a power microphone as stock items. Not WX channels and blue tooth
nor a USB Port !

Bring back the 148 Mobile in some form.
An SSB Walkie Talkie for Camping.
The 2000 base in a new form.
Base the new radio on SDR to keep the cost down - Less Parts inside !
A mobile and desk power microphone and some decent antennas !

Just what I want as a CBer.

My opinion: Cobra is out of touch with the CB market. They pushed the FCC for FM to increase their sales but really all they had to do was bring back the sideband units.

Look on eBay as a survey old cobra 148s and 2000s get a good price on the market though there 25+ years old we’re the model 29 cobra new used or re condition factory jobs pretty much $35 used $80 new you can’t find a 148 for that price they want 2-3 times that. SSB sells radios maybe not in the numbers as
A bubble pack am rig and magnetic antenna
But those first time buyers get disappointed fast and don’t come back.

Start building AM/FM/SSB 10 meter hand helds and you will make some $.
How about A SSB Fm unit that you enter you ham call sign in it looks at the FCC data base and if your there it opens up to a 10-11-12 meter radio.
If Cobra wanted to be innovative they just have to look at cb and ham web sites and send some people to ham fests or truck stops.
FM cb won’t work unless there is somebody on the other end with A Fm mode cb too and what channels will be fm?

Although illegal, I've noticed more and more interest in radios which can be modified, optioned, etc, particularly in the prepper and survivalist community. I happened to see one setup at a persons home and was fascinated that they have figured out certain CB radios from China can do FM, out of band TX/RX, packet, etc. One of the "ops" I talked to said the only negative is most Chinese radios do not come with schematics or service manuals to hack them further, or repair.

I was so intrigued that I purchased one of the radios, and have been playing with it on the bench. Two interesting observations. In the FM mode, their spec for opening squelch is better than they state. On the negative side, their claimed power is stated to be 4 watts, while the stock radio I got was 3.34 watts. Their RF deck is somewhat lacking, which is why most people use amps and set the radio to 1 watt. Caveat: My testing has been into a load with service monitor. However, with the radio into an antenna, the receive side was pretty darn good.

Cobra is looking to make sales in numbers
Nut jobs like Preppers Free branders and lost hams like me are not the selling force.
There looking at Amazon or Walmart buyers and what special mix of Chrome and black
With some out of the box works with no setup
Time sells.
Look how they sell FRS radios that have a 15 mile range- family buys it they don’t work
More than 500 feet but it was a sale with the odds that it won’t be returned.
The same with cb Fm . Guy buys it puts it in the car goes on a vacation didn’t hear anything and says screw it and its goes on the garage shelf but it’s still a sale.

I agree that a lot of sales are made to the ignorant masses, (same can be said about OTA television antennas). I spend about 2 hours a week trying to convince someone that bought one of these antennas, puts it in their basement, and can't figure out the problem. Like CB, there are no shops which guide users to the right product, and implementation. The public is woefully ignorant and suffer for it.

I do differ with you nut job comment. The folks I met are far from running rampent as freebanders. They just use the radios in place of phones and cellphones in off grid situation. All of the folks I met were decent, and four of them were ex military radio operators. But you seldom hear them because they conduct their business and get off. No long winded conversations.

Update on the request to show the results of the survey... The marketing director needs to keep that information confidential.

Sorry..

I started the survey but when got to my email address, I backed out. I'm already inundated with spam and junk mail.

Hi KK4JUG,

Thanks for trying and understood. Junk email and robo calls are the norm these days, sadly. However, I will advise marketing to consider the collection of email addresses as optional.
