Does anyone know what these codes used by Dauphin co. law enf. mean? One was referring to a walk away from a local hospital as a "302" commitment. Does this mean Mental case or a prisoner at the Hosp.? Another was a "3802". This may possibly be a PA penal code number. Thanks!

I don't think NJ and PA have the same codes.

201 is a voluntary commitment
302 is an involuntary commitment. If you run away from a 302, it becomes a legal warrant for your arrest.

In Pennsylvania under the law:
301: Voluntary Committment Non-Life Threatening
302: Involuntary Committment - A threat to yourself and others

Back about a year ago over the Memorial Day weekend I was with a group of friends up at a cabin in Tioga County blowing stuff up (Tannerite is cool stuff!) and just having a blast shooting old appliances and DOA electronics. Anyway my 2nd night there I drank some alcohol and it really screwed me up. I am not a very big drinker and it was a while since I drank. Since I have diabetes and had been drinking the two caused me to have flashbacks when I was in the USAF stationed in Honduras. I guess I just snapped.

Needless to say my friends didn't know what the hell to do. Here I was saluting trees and talking to my "commander" and one of my friends approached me to make sure I was alright and I disarmed the walking stick from him and threw him to the ground.

They contacted the PA State Police who came out, along with some local officers from the Wellsboro police department and I don't remember any of it,but apparently they had to use mace and multiple people had to jump on top of me and somehow I wrestled myself out of the situation and ran out the door where I was then gang tackled and subdued. Luckily for me the only charges were "harassment", a summary offense. When they took me to the hospital they initially were going to place me in there on a 302 commitment, but after my sugar level came down from 532 down to 300 and soon I realized what had occurred and they basically told me that I would either commit myself for treatment (301) or they would have to enforce the 302 order. I of course chose the 301.

Moral of the story: Never have a relapse about the military when you are over four hours away from home. My wife, while pissed was just glad that I was ok and getting the treatment I needed.

3802 is actually a sub-section of the Vehicle Code, not the Crimes Code (which is what we call the "penal" code).

A little side note: West Chester PD uses "10-37" to signify an intoxicated subject; this particular 10-code was based off of the pre-2004 DUI section in the Vehicle Code, which was Section 3731.

Thanks, Ben, for finally getting it right. It is, in fact, 201 and 302, contrary to previous posts.

and for useless trivia information...

201 and 302 are the applicable sections from the Mental Health Act that deal with voluntary and involuntary commitments (respectively).

Lancaster County also uses the 10-37 code for intoxicated subjects...
