com error help

trying to hook a BC436XT to the computer. Bought a USB to serial adapter and installed. The com port is working right but I can't communicate with the scanner.

There's nowhere near enough info here to diagnose this. Which USB adapter did you buy? Did you install the correct driver for your OS (Vista, Win7...)? What is your OS? Did you examine Device Manager in Windows to see if there's something else taking the port you thought you had? Did you perform the setup for the scanner's port? What software are you using?
