Hello all, I currently reside in Collierville, TN right outside of Memphis, TN. My wife and I are wanting to move to a different place, to try something new.

We could probably move any place we wanted to, but are considering NC. Mainly the Raleigh area, or the subs. around it.

I just wanted some of your input on where a good city, town, area would be to move to.

Any input would be much appreciated!!!

Thanks!

A bit more information, Thomas, might help in focusing suggested locations from the list members:

- Do you have children in school ?
- Do you prefer the beach or the mountains ?
- Is being close to a major urban area important ?
- Are you looking for a place with job opportunities, or a place to retire ?

While I would recommend Charlotte as a great place for scanning and amateur radio, I would not suggest it for its school system, traffic problems, mismanagement (my opinion) of tax revenue, and failure to plan for future growth.

Good questions Jeff.

We don't have any children yet but are planning.

We would prefer the beach. We were interested in moving to VA Beach, but just cannot afford it at this time in our lives. We don't have to live "on" the beach, but closer than we are now is what we are looking for.

As far as being close to an urban area, it's not important at all. We live in a small town, well, city now. So we are used to the "small town" life.

As for a job, I'm a GM auto technician. I've started browsing around for jobs, but I'm not comming up with many at all.

We are planning to take a vacation to visit the area and see how we like it.

We just wanted some advise from locals as far as locations. Low crime rate, good schools, nice living enviroment. Kind of like where we live now.

Thanks for the help!

Charlotte-2 hours to the mountains-4 hours to the beach.

Scanning activity:
Raleigh-Yawn.
Charlotte-Priceless.

Keep in mind that the Charlotte Meck. School system is garbage. I graduated in '06 after attending school in the system since the 3rd grade, and it's just horrible. The school system has a very hard time keeping super intendents. If you plan on having kids... you might want to look into the private schools here.

Cmon Brother...I gotta say that Monitoring the Raleigh/Central NC Area is just as good and active if not better than Charlotte...don't forget we are home to the major (and first!) users of the VIPER project here in Wake County...we have all types of systems here from Low Band VHF to UHF to 800Mhz...you name it you can monitor it here in Central NC!

Lots of great suggestions guys! Thanks alot!

We are looking to buy a home also, but we will get an apartment first while we get settled, and I look for some employment.

Everyone loves to bash CMS. Remember, the schools can only do so much, the rest is up to the individual.

It is possible to find good public schools in Charlotte. You just have to be careful where you live. We've had nothing but positive experiences with CMS at the school level.

The school board is juvenile and much of the administration is disfunctional, but don't write off all of the individual schools. As far as superintendents go, I don't see turnover here any worse than anywhere else.

To add to my search, as far as distance from the beach goes, we don't want to live directly on the coast. Maybe 2-3 hours away. Maybe some place like Garner??

Also, does NC have a state income tax?

Marshall,

VIPER...ZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzz.

I'm not talking cows in the road.
Or the Guv. wants to go for a ride.

I'm talkin' gangs, shootouts in the streets, barricading your doors, animals doing unnatural things, International terrorists taking pictures downtown and working at the local Citgo.
People having sex on buildings. AND DYING!!!
Excuse me, that was Columbia. They beat us both on that one.
The Sheriff's Dept. is on riot standby the 4th to back up CMPD.
Quatro de Julio or something like that.
Hell, we're going to have light rail in Charlotte ( helps criminals to get to work ).
We even have a bus stop in S. Charlotte just for illegals from wherever can get off.
Drunken transplants on jet skis on Lake Norman.
Snakefish and Piranhas in Lake Wiley. I'm not kidding.
Alligators in city ponds.

Marshall, Come on down on the 4th and bring your scanner.
Just install a cooling fan on it to keep it from melting.

For people who may not understand...Raleigh and Charlotte have had a friendly pissin' contest for the past couple of hundred years.
It's all in fun.

NOT!!!!!

I am sorry Blinddog...I am having too much trouble reading your posts and still trying to listen to the 2 stabbings Raleigh is working on at this time...add in a couple of serious accidents and you can now see why Central NC OWNS Charlotte in the radio monitoring field :D

Go back to watchin' the Bobcats loose another game brother ;):D

Considering how high our property taxes are, anywhere is probably cheaper, state income tax or not. I pay $4.09 per $100 land value for county taxes. Tack on another $1.42 per $100 for city taxes. Plus add in all the fees and taxes the city puts on services, (water, sewage, storm water fee, waste water disposal blah blah blah). It's like $50 in fees alone, not including the price for use of water. And our sales tax is 9.25%.

Stabbings...Phhtttt !
We have those at day care centers.
Do your bad guys not know how to operate a gun?
Send them down here to Pop a Cap In Your A** school.
Auto accidents ? Don't have them.
Traffic backed up to bad.
Bobcats...boring....Combination human sacrifice and tractor pull is what we want.
'Canes, didn't they win some kind of cup a few years ago.
I think I saw some small article in the paper about it.
Under the local NASCAR and local NFL section of the sports page.
Hockey in the South...please.
Pave over the ice rink and have car races in there.
Bad Sh*t.
Hell I had a cop car stole in front of my house the other day.

Sorry, I've got to take a break here...Just heard a 10-66 called in.
( notify coroner )
Damn preschoolers.

Thomas,
You really couldn't live any cheaper in Mecklenburg Co.
The surrounding counties would be a lot cheaper.
Everybody that works in Charlotte commutes.
Except me..dashing urbanite that I am.

Raleigh is a nice family town to live in.
Doesn't have nearly the problems of Charlotte.
Garner is expanding really fast.

Charlotteans are moving back to the city.
But brother it ain't cheap.
Old crack houses and houses of ill repute.
Slap on some new siding and fix the plumbing and sell for $500,000.
Transplants snatch 'em as fast as they can.
Historical neighborhoods....yeah right.

Come on down to Charlotte....... Charlotte's a good place, you just have to avoid certain sections.
All city's are the same way.

If you need a real estate "person" in Wilmington - LET ME KNOW , I have an Aunt that is very prominent in the real estate world in that area. In fact she was voted best saleswomen last year or the year before , think she was working with ReMax when that all happened , but anyway I'm sure she could steer you in the right direction. Wilmington might indeed be your best shot at getting a halfway decent job with your experience and being close to the beaches that is.
