3 in custody at Mounds OK. They had loot at the base of the tower and had climbed up - when one of the tower tenants pulled up to answer an alarm on their equipment. They held them at gunpoint until Okmulgee County SO got there and arrested the three.

2 were caught the other day on four wheelers there.

They need to have a 6 month waiting period on getting the funds from recycling copper. This payment would need to be by a mailed check as well. This would not only eliminate (well, vastly reduce) the theft, but also provide a way to track the purchaser (they'd need to give a valid address or not get paid) as well as add mail fraud charges to the crime.

What thief looking to cash in a quick grab would be willing to wait half a year to get their money from the crime. If they can't have the funds to buy their drugs they'll probably not steal the copper in the first place.

Not sure this would work. They'd just go through middle-men. The middle-man would get a cut because he has to do the waiting.

It would at least slow them down some. Also, how many 'middle-men' would be willing to do this if the authorities use this 6 months to investigate the thefts and start arresting them instead of (or in addition to) the real thieves. Especially if the law forcing this requires exacting details on what was recycled, including photos and whatever else would be required to assist in the investigations. There could also be a requirement for them to be licensed (with background checks, etc.) which could be pulled (and all pending payments forfited) upon conviction and all payments placed on hold during any ongoing investigations.

Some of the copper thieves here didn't have to worry about getting caught, Because they got electrocuted.

four more were just caught up there tonite. Having a caretaker there sure keeps things hopping. And two were detained in the driveway due to the passenger drunk in the vehicle, and the driver 15 with no license....

Copper thieves are stealing live power lines! What next? I bet they start stealing the hi-tension power distribution tranmission lines on the national grid. Oh well, here's the article from nwitimes.

GARY | Thieves have climbed utility poles and cut live copper wires in 14 separate incidents since Sunday in a neighborhood adjacent to downtown.

The thieves have made off with 2,300 feet of wire weighing an estimated 600 pounds, according to NIPSCO. The utility is asking for the public's help in stopping the thefts.

"It is not only a danger to the people doing this, but it also is causing outages for the residents of that neighborhood," said NIPSCO spokesman Nick Meyer.

NIPSCO is urging residents who see anything suspicious to call police. The area where the thefts have taken place is east of Broadway between U.S. 20 on the north and 11th Avenue on the south.

Ever since copper soared in value five years ago, utilities, commuter railroads and construction sites have been frequent targets for thieves willing to take ever greater risks to get their hands on copper they can sell for more than $4 per pound at scrapyards.

Our regional rail carrier (SEPTA) has been experiencing a lot of thefts lately. they've been targeting static ground lines that run along the right of ways. They are climbing 75' tall I-beam structures within feet of 50,000 Kv lines. Freakin MOW-RONS!!
