I'm not in North Carolina, but out here on the other side of the continent, we all cooperate pretty well and share resources.

I have county radios at a few of my sites. I share with them and they share with me. No need to exchange money over it, it's just a wash.
They have some stuff in adjacent counties where it makes sense.

Cooperation is good for everyone.

I'm going to assume you are refer to VIPER system. I'm sure some talk groups can roam to a neighboring tower as needed.

In the last hour I've seen 4 different counties dispatch talkgroups on one of the Viper sites I typically monitor. Pretty common occurrence especially on sites that are close to county lines.

There are towers in neighboring states as well as other counties in my state that serve my county. It's all about coverage. Public safety has no boundaries.

Yes, I am referring to Viper. It was a real 'head scratcher' for me. Even though I had heard of it before. I had been unable to get reception in Orange County(neighboring county), until. I switched to the tower on Chatham Mtn in my home county. Now it comes in fine.

Ah, OK. If it's a statewide or regional trunked system, it's where the radios affiliate, dragging the talk group over to that site.

Up here in Maryland, There is a county that has 4 talk groups on a tower that is in Virginia and a totally different system right across the Potomac River to cover that part of the county.

The Chatham Mtn. site often carries traffic from talkgroups spread across 3 different counties (Alamance, Chatham, and Orange).

Viper system works great on all the towers and as said you may hear a different tower being used for traffic. There is even a tower just across the line in Clay County Georgia for the far western NC traffic. Since I have NAS radio I get all the traffic regardless of location, even in Horry County Not sure I can go back to a scanner now since Phase 2 is coming to us soon. What I paid for the APX and programming service was equal to those high dollar scanners.

I hear NCSHP traffic here in Clay County NC from officers out close to Asheville. Make sense as they are dispatched all the way out there in Newton. without the affiliation the trooper here in my town could not communicate with dispatch.

That leads me to a question: If a officer is driving to transport a inmate to another county and keys up on VIPER to speak with his department. Can traffic from his department be heard on the tower after he is gone? Hope that makes sense!

Yes, the VIPER folks have the system tweaked and ready to do the job from anywhere in NC. Budget cuts forced closure of several dispatch centers but troopers can be dispatched from any of the comms centers with a click of the mouse. System works well in most of state

Radio just has to be configured correctly to utilize the various talkgroups.

but also the system has to be provisioned for multi tower use. Some talkgroups can be restricted to a certain area by the system admin.

I moved from that region in 2019. Are you referring to Montgomery County on the MD side, and Arlington or Fairfax County on VA side?

Not once they get out of range of towers located in the neighboring county.
All radios have access to statewide channels across the state, but their individual department channels don’t roam more than one county out.
