• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

I've got a dozen CP185s I need to program for work to replace some vx261s. Idk why they chose the CP185 but that's what I'm stuck with. I just received a copy of the CPS version 2.03 from Mother M but the radios firmware is on the radio is 3.04. I'm unable to read or write a codeplug to these radios. What is the newest CPS version for these radios? I've got get these things programmed. I'm slightly annoyed that I spent alot of money on the CPS, and I'm unable to program these dinky radios.

CP185's are entry-level cheap radios. If you purchase them from a Radius dealer, they have a totally different model number but basically are the same radio as the CP185. Some have displays, similar models no displays. They are one step ahead of the BPR40, which was a bottom-of-the-line radio. The dealership I worked for directed us to "upsell" the customer to a better radio, but that wouldn't always happen. I would say that 1/2 the time, these radios would come back with low audio or no audio, poor range, and broken controls. They were definitely NOT intended for rough service or heavy-duty performance. Before the CP200D's (digital) came out, we'd sell oodles of CP200 (analog only) radios. They were slightly better in performance than the CP185's or their Radius equivalent.

I am sorry I cannot give you any advice about your programming issue.

Try making a new codeplug and writing to the radio. Not writing to the radio a codeplug you already have from another radio.
Make up just a couple channel "from scratch" codeplug and see if you can write it to the radio. That should make the radio now have 2.03.

Update: Motorola sent me the old version of the CPS I needed. They went into my account and enabled it to be downloaded, and now I am able to program these "wonderful" new radios. Spend the extra money and get the XPR3000E radios. They sound better, are heavier made, and feel better in the hand. I give it a year and we will be buying new radios, but that is a discussion for another thread

XPR3000E's can have their fair share of issues as well.. Antenna nut is the major weak point on them (if the radio lands on the antenna, off for repeair). Display is the second major weak point.
