Dead 780 Display?!?!

I've had the 780 for over 7 years running 24/7. The other day the display was VERY hard to read (very light...almost washed out w/ the back-light). I ordered up a Bct15 figuring it was on its' last legs (I'm a Fire Chief and really need the scanner for work).

Question...is the display dead or, like the 15 is there a ribbon or something else I could try and fix (BTW...it is not the contrast, I have it set to high)? I really do like the 780 and would rather not crap-can the thing if I could help it.

That is a known problem from what I understand there is a resistor that goes bad causing the problem. If you go to the 780 Yahoo group http://groups.yahoo.com/group/UnidenBC780XLT/
and search the archive for display contrast you will find out more about it.

Mine (bought re-conditioned) did that and I sent it to Uniden for repair. The dispaly now looks better than it did when I first got it.
