Attention all News Desks and Journalists:

Denver international Airport – with the cooperation of several law enforcement agencies, as well as many emergency response agencies from Denver and the surrounding community – will be conducting a Red Alert and Aviation Security exercise at the airport this morning (10/6).

Due to the nature of the event and the scenarios/processes that are being exercised this morning, this drill will not be open to the media. The exercise will take place on a remote part of the airfield in an attempt not to disrupt normal airport operations.

A number of emergency vehicles will be staged in various locations around the airport in advance of the exercise. This will likely prompt calls to your organizations from folks asking what is going on. The exercise will begin at approximately 10 a.m. (although prep and staging will start long before that) and end shortly after noon.

In addition to the presence of emergency vehicles and personnel, lights, sirens, smoke, simulated gunfire noise and an emergency medical helicopter will also be used during the exercise. Again, this will likely prompt calls to your organizations from potential airline passengers and other members of the general public who may see or hear parts of the exercise.

You may also hear portions of the exercise over your scanners. As mentioned above, this is a red alert and aviation security exercise. Without sharing too many details, we can tell you that the exercise will start as an aircraft accident (red alert) involving a fictional airline. During the rescue efforts associated with the simulated accident, the situation will develop into a security situation.

Please note that DIA’s airspace will be closed to media helicopters during this event as well.

We thank you, in advance, for your cooperation. We regret that we have to close this event to our friends and colleagues in the media, but we hope you will understand the sensitive nature of the exercise and why DIA and the cooperating law enforcement agencies have chosen to limit outside participation and observation. The reason for the exercise is to meet federal regulatory mandates for proficiency and training in the aviation industry.

Please direct any questions to the airport Media Relations office:
