My friend has it. It does what its supposed to do... But this is not a trunking scanner. So only conventional things.
The 404 is a very basic scanner...no 800 MHz, no trunking, no PL/DPL.
So I guess the real question is: Did you do your homework before buying it, to make sure it was capable of receiving the frequencies and agencies you wanted to listen to?
Also, we have no idea if the scanner is a "waste" for you, since none of us are mind readers and have no clue where you live or what specifically you are trying to listen to (not without searching for your other threads...it would be helpful for you to put your location in your profile, or be more specific in your posts)

Your not gonna be able to listen to LAPD/FD as they are all digital

That depends; what do you need it for?
I think the replies you have received pretty well hits it on the head. It is incumbent upon the buyer to research what they will need. If after looking at the database for their area and the wiki to check the capabilities of various scanners, the buyer still isn't quite sure, then it is time to turn to the forums to simply ask for assistance. Everyone of us had our time as a newbie, so we have all been there done that. The one thing I never do is run out and buy a piece of electronics without doing my research and comparisons. It is always prudent to be an informed buyer.
