I sent my BCD396T in for repair of the USB port (it came loose from the PCB) over 2 weeks ago, and the online progress page still only states that my scanner has been received, and a prjected ship date of 10/26 nothing more. Anyone else deal with their repair deptartment? Why should it take soooooo long? I miss you scanner! Come home soon.

I sent mine in for the antenna connection that was sheared off, due to an auto accident. It took about a month total, but it was repaired and worked great after the repair.

They might still be looking for the USB port, since the 396T doesn't have one.

It took about a month for them to replace the Flex Cable on my 996XT but it works great now.

I have sent two radios in for repair that weren't under warranty. It took about a month to get them back. The work was first class and everything is working 100% upon return.

I would think that a month would be a reasonable amount of time for a repair. Stuff is fixed on a first come - first serve basis and if you count the shipping time, you are only looking at around 2 weeks sitting on the to-be-repaired shelf.

In 2009 I sent both of mine for repair. It took about 4 weeks to get taken care of. One had to fix the tuning dial. Both of them needed the software updates that didn't want to communicate with my computers. I was very satisfied with the service that I received.

I have to admit I am rather impatient at times. And a month really isn't bad. Just goes to show how much I use the scanner. Very happy with it, and can't wait to get it back. K8TEK... I maybe should have said Mini-USB ? Whatever, everyone knows what I meant.

P.S. There's nothing wrong with the design, or construction of the port. I just plugged and unplugged it so often that I wore it out, moving it to and from the car PC and the house.

It isn't a mini USB or micro USB port. It isn't USB, period. It is a RS-232 port, more commonly known as a serial port. Serial and universal serial bus are not the same thing. That is kind of like putting gasoline in a diesel engine... What the hell, the engine knows what I mean.

I know how you feel ,waiting is hard.
On my BC346XT and BCD996XT the port connector in question is a USB 2.0 mini B 5 type connector, female. I think yours is too. The communications port uses 3 wire EIA232 electrical specification. “Over the 40+ years since this standard was developed, the Electronic Industries Association published three modifications, the most recent being the EIA232F standard introduced in 1997” *. Besides changing the name from RS232 to EIA232, some signal lines were renamed and various new ones were defined, including a shield conductor.
Uniden did not use a typical way of connecting controller instrumentation. The physical connectors do not determine the communications protocols but there are generally industry wide accepted methods which Uniden has not complied with. The USB 2.0 mini B 5 type connector that Uniden chose to use was for convenience, low cost and small foot print. So it can be visually misleading. Most EIA232(RS232) connections are made with DB9 connectors and older types used DB25 connectors. On DB9 connectors Controller end tend to be male Pin 2 TXD Pin 3 RCX Pin 5 TRGrnd , Terminal End the same but TXD and RCX nomenclature reversed. When two hosts or controller/terminal configurations are connected together Pins 2 and Pins 3 are swapped and local control lines internally jumped – this is most often called a null modem connection. There is much confusion as to how to make connections so most equipment manufacturers publish specific cable wiring and handshake specifications. And or supply the cable itself.
The electronic technicians who will work on your radio will know full well what you are talking about.

You're right KTEK.... It's the other end of the cable that's USB. I made a mistake. It's all good. You could lighten up a little though. BTW I intentionally misspelled your call sign 'cause I knew it would drive you nuts. I'm cool like that )

Yeah, because nothing throws me into a rage quicker then leaving the region number out of my call sign. I think I may have to go throw some things around and break the windows out of my neighbors trailer now.

I do think it is stupid that Uniden hasn't implemented USB in their pre home patrol. USB has been around for 14 years and most computer manufacturers did away with RS-232 ports years ago. Hell, even Motorola started making OEM USB programming cables years ago. I'm positive people would be more then willing to pay $5 more per scanner for a USB controller so they don't have to go out and buy a lame USB to RS-232 converter.

Exactly what I had to do in order to program my 996T. New computer (Win 7 - 64 bit) has USB ports sticking out of it all over --- but not one RS-232. Damn thing doesn't even have a parallel printer port.

Well, I got my scanner back and it works like a charm. Guess those Uniden techs figured out what I needed after all. Hmmmm.)
