DENVER -- A Denver police officer shot a man who made threatening motions with a knife Tuesday evening at a YMCA, Detective John White with the Denver Police Department said.
Officers arrived at the YMCA at 16th Street and Lincoln Avenue on a welfare check, White said. They went to the third floor and found a man who they said was distraught and was displaying a knife. After trying to negotiate with the man, police said he made threatening motions and an officer shot him once in the torso.
White said the man's injuries were not thought to be life threatening, adding that he was up and around and speaking after the incident.
The officer involved, whose name has not been released, has been placed on administrative paid leave until the investigation is complete, as is policy, White said.
The suspect's name has not been released.
