I just received a distress call on 11175. Numerous stations are trying to contact the distressed station to advise him to switch to an alternate freq. This does not appear to be an exercise at this time. Time 0922 EST.

The distressed station appears to be Reach 226. Offutt,McClellan and Puerto Rico trying to make contact. Again unsure if this is real life or exercise. I have not received any indication that this is exercise at this time.

Nothing further to report on the distress call.Maybe switched to an alternate freq?

There has been a lot of strange activity on 11175 the last couple of days. I have logged a ton of aircraft and land base stations calling in radio checks. Base station giving three counts as well. I wonder if they have made some major upgrades to the system or something that they are testing out?

I wish, I can't find what exact phrase was being said. Do they just say "Reach 21 Distress" or is there more to it?

I believe "Reach" is the call sign for the heavy airlift flights ie C-17s and C-5s.

Reach is the callsign of aircraft on an AMC mission, in other words an aircraft of USAF Air Mobility Command.

That's very strange; isn't calling a mayday/sos/emergency illegal in every single way, unless it IS an emergency? I'm pretty sure false calling is quite a heavy fine, even if it is the military.

Did you hear any more? I have noticed a lot of radio checks, etc on it the last couple days too on GHFS.

Reach flights go outbound over here a lot, hopefully they put it down safly somewhere.

I just heard Reach726 checking in on 11175, maybe that is the same aircraft on thier return flight.

The land based stations trying to make contact to the distressed caller seemed very concerned as they frantically made several attempts to try and contact him. This did not appear to be an exercise! Unfortunately I was unable to hear the calling station from my location.I do not have the ability to record so was unable to capture a clip to share.

The calls were....Station in distress this is Offutt,Offutt please say again your alternate freq. Station in distress this is Puerto Rico can you copy...please say again your alternate freq. Station in distress this is McClellan can you copy...what is your alternate freq?

They then started calling him by the call sign "Reach 226" can you copy...please say again your alternate freq! This went on for about five minutes and then it suddenly went silent. They may have got him to switch.

As far as the unsual amount of activity goes on here...I have never received so many "Mainsail" calls and radio checks on here before. Almost non stop all day long! Something is definitely going on!

I'm sure someone more knowledgable about this will correct if wrong but as of 10/2010, Reach 226 was assigned to a C-17A with the 437th AW

Today, Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton threatened to bomb Col. Momar's military positions if he didn't give up power and flee the country. Somehow I don't think the Colonel is quaking in his boots at this time! But then again, we did bomb his country once a long time ago and killed one of his daughters. Perhaps he should be worrried?

I sent email to a friend at AMC HQ asking if he'd heard about any IFEs this week, but no response from him yet.

Obviously, if a cockpit crew is under a lot of stress, they may not give their full, proper radio callsign, so 226 could be the last three of their tail #, but the REACH numerical suffix could also be part of their mission #.

Keep in mind, a lot of REACH aircraft have SATCOM capability these days, so his sudden failure to respond back on HF/SSB could be because someone in the cockpit reached their command center on SATCOM.
