I recall when HRO put these out for sale - the RFinder LLC B1-Plus. Months later, few of them ever sold in my area.

I know more than a couple of Hams that MUST have the latest gear. I've heard it was nightmare to set up.

Maybe your trying at the wrong times. Most likely activity in evenings and weekends.

We have a really robust DMR system of repeaters in Maryland, Southern Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware and Washington DC.

Almost everywhere I go can access a repeater on the HT.

Sometimes I don't get a response on the repeater, but that not keeping me from using DMR. I have a lot of DMR HTs, plus a Connect Systems Mobile in the car.

I i only use the local or Statewide talkgroups.

You could look at the repeater and talk group you were on via Hoseline and see if your callsign / ID shows up. You can also monitor Hoseline through you computer, but the audio will be a bit delayed.

Are you connecting directly through a repeater or through a hot spot?

You also need to remember that some talkgroups are fulltime and others are push to talk and only stay on for a matter of time like 10 minutes before the talkgroup times out. So the PTT ones you need to transmit on them occasionally to keep receiving it.

You call also see the activity on the system on Peer Watch on the link I provided above.

Based on your location there should be repeater you can hit and I would try the Tristate talkgroup, every time I have been on a Pennsylvania or a New Jersey repeater many people on it.

Also it's most likely PTT with it being out of State, every Thursday evening there is net on Maryland Statewide 3124 you most likely can access. Pre-net check ins start at 1930 local with net starting at 2000 local. Around 25-30 hams on the net. Many check ins from the surrounding States like Pennsylvania and Delaware.

Hope that helps you in your quest for DMR.

Fred1 - Many regular DMR nets in PA and nearby. Most of them ongoing for more than 5 years now and still open and very active. Here are a few of them -
- PA Statewide DMR Every Tues at 8pm local on PA statewide TG 3142
- NEPANet Northeast PA net Every Weds at 1pm local on NEPA TG 31424 (lots of non-NEPA activity here as well)
- PA Crossmode Net Every Thurs 7pm PA Crossmode TG 31425
Checking in on any of the above will connect you with the active DMR community in PA and surrounding states.

I monitor Iowa Statewide (3119) often and throw my call out there periodically. I rarely hear anything until the Sunday evening net. I always hear traffic on Brandmeister 91 and 3100 and TGIF 31665. Another fun one I recently discovered is Kansas City Wide - Lots of ways to get in, lots of nets, lots of interesting conversations and just a bunch of nice hams! America's Kansas City Wide – Kansas City wide-area System Fusion network

I suppose one could say that the time of year could have something to do with it - it's summer and people are outside doing things but it's about the same in the colder months - around here, anyway.

I think this all depends on where you are and how you are getting into DMR. As some have told you about what talkgroups might be on a repeater and how they may not stay active on that repeater this might mean they are not on active groups. One way to look at this as well is before things like DMR you could maybe hit 2-4 repeater from where you were depending on location and if on an HT or mobile. And all that could talk in that repeater were the people like you that were close enough to hit it. Now with things like DMR people do not need to be even near a repeater if they have a hotspot. And instead of a few repeater they had to talk on there are now 1000's of talkgroups out there for people to use. There are talkgroups out there now I could ID on and somebody would come back to me just about anytime and there are some where nobody would answer depending on the time of day.
Now if you are saying DMR is dead because nobody is on a local repeater you can hit maybe try and find the repeater owner and find out what talkgroups he has on there and how to make it work. Maybe he does not want an very active group on there. Maybe he would not mind turning on a more active group. I think sometimes our problems can be fixed if we just talk to others. We are suppose to be communicators

Locally it has backed off. Our repeaters are not affiliated with any network. They are linked with other repeaters throughout the state owned by the same guy. There used to be a bunch of guys on during rush hour, but they’re all gone. Others have come, & gone, like it’s a phase to try, & give up. But the same core group who were on Rick’s system 10 years ago are still there. Many came on board with the cheap availability of the TYT MD380, but gave up due to their lousy performance, & blamed it on the DMR mode. They never tried a XPR6550 which by that time was $100 on the used market. However I will admit today’s Anytone, & Alinco radios are light years better than a MD380.

It's hit or miss depending on the area you're in and what networks the repeaters are linked to. If you check out Brandmeister Hoseline there is quite a bit of activity on various TGs. If you can't access the busier TGs on your local repeater then consider getting a hotspot to use at home. America Link which is on System Fusion but accessible via Brandmeister stays pretty active. Good luck!
