I am in Kansas and we are converting to the P25 statewide 800 system. My question is, do I need to program all 122 frequencies or only those frequencies on local area towers?

Thanks!

You don't say what kind of scanner you use. You need a digital scanner that will follow trunked systems. If you have that then all you should need to program are the Control Channels for the towers you want to monitor.

There are only 40 control channel frequencies. There a link on the KSICS webpage.

I was mistaken on this, that file is out of date. I have discovered 3 control channels that are not in that file. There may be more.

It is my understanding on the P25 system you only need to enter the freqs on the local tower only including the control channels.

If you never go anywhere else other than your home city, all you need program in is just the control channels of the two to four towers surrounding you.

If, on the other hand you frequently travel to different parts of the State, you will want to put in the control channels for as many of the towers as you can. I believe there are currently 28 non-duplicate control channels in the system:

866.550000, 867.312500, 867.462500, 867.237500, 866.575000, 866.712500, 867.487500, 867.112500, 866.625000, 866.737500, 867.900000, 852.112500, 851.575000, 852.462500, 852.487500, 851.550000, 852.350000, 866.912500, 866.962500, 866.987500, 867.612500, 867.387500, 852.237500, 852.312500, 866.850000, 867.062500, 851.850000, 852.062500

This, of course, changes as new towers are added and rebanding unfolds. Also, I believe a couple of the listed control channels are not actually in use and the alternate is being used. Listen for the data on the active channels in your area to be sure you are getting the right ones programmed in.

As far as programming, each scanner is different. Some scanners you have to put a conventional frequency in between each control channel, others (most notably the object oriented programming types) allow you to put 32 or more control channels as part of the same system object. Some of the older models only allow one control channel per bank. Your mileage will vary and all rebates are retained by dealer.......

That radio will monitor P-25 traffic. All you need to program into it are the control channels for the tower(s) you want to monitor. The actual traffic channel info is included in the data on the control channel.
