im a newbie just getting my first scanner a couple of days ago but im taking it out for the first time today. ive become a little addicted to listening and am foremost a prepper/survivalist, im not sure why im taking it with me - because of my addictive personality or my survivalist instinct.

just wondering if you guys leave home without one and your reasoning for packing it.

I have one in my car, and use the portable if I'm going to a fire scene.

I'm here a lot
Most times, yes.
When the weather is nasty I place a clear, thin gauge plastic bag around the handheld to keep it dry but allows me to "push the buttons"

I usually take a portable out with me. When I don't do that, then something usually happens that I really wish I could have listened to. But most of the time, nothing happens when I do have it.

I've come to realize that, by bringing it, I'm preventing terrible things from happening, and protecting folks from harm.

Yes. I normally carry a scanner, fire pager, a department issued two-way, and keep my personal two-way on my turnout gear. Out of those, the scanner is the only one making noise, on a regular basis. (The pager is kept in alert mode, and the two-way is typically off, unless responding to a call.)

Most of the time on weekends, I'll take it in the car with me. If I'm going to walk around one of the malls in my area, I'll listen to the color dots and mall security as I approach. Rule of thumb and respect is not to take the scanner into the mall. if I want to go the airport and watch planes in the obsersation lot afterwards, I'm all set.

You 'betcha!

I feel naked if I leave the house without my scanner or two way! I have actually gotten out to my Jeep to find I have a scanner, but no keys! I love my Pro-97 which is great for me as I have no trunked or digital systems nearby(I live at the edge of world). Here VHF hi band is king and I can almost fit everything I want in 16 channels on my Batwing HT-1000 Addicted or obsessed? I fit both bills, but I love radio in general and hope the day never comes when I have no need for them...

It's rare that I don't take my scanner with me.

As a newbie, I strongly urge you to resist the temptation to go to the scenes of what you hear. it may sound like fun, but can get you in trouble in many ways.

Scanner

When I was in high school I carried one of those little RS radios (like a walkman) which would pickup VHF Hi band. Never really liked portable scanners back then, just didn't have nay range to speak of. This was before repeaters and trunking. Had some Great crystal scanners way back then.
Lately, no I don't have any portable scanners and the 2 scanners I do still have are tied up doing RR feeds. Between the 2 of them there is like $1000 tied up so no I don't usually take a scanner with me. Not to mention in this State it is illegal except for Hams to have scanners mobile. Yeah, I know I got a Ham Ticket but who wants to bother with some of these local LEO's and have to go to court to get your scanner back.

Haven't scanned away from the house in years.........no mobile, no portable.

If I can't have base station quality, I'd rather have nothing at all.

I'll listen just before I leave the house for road / traffic conditions and plan my route accordingly.

I have several scanners in the house, 3 scanners in the vehicle and 2 handhelds for when I go out for any length of time. I usually take a handheld with me if I am out for a long time or if there is an event (weather, public safety) going on.

If I go camping..I take it to listen ; search freq bands ; and plug in a few freqs i dont have allocations for to " Confirm " them.

Other than that, It is close by..along with batterys in case I need to grab it and go.

I'm not always listening to a scanner, but I pretty much always have one available wherever I go. A BCD996XT stays in my personal truck, a BC246T for work (different truck everyday), and a BCD396XT is my "home" scanner (it also goes with me wherever I travel).

Yes,I too take one with me all the time. I have a 996XT and a PSR 600 in my truck. If I am around town the XT stays in tone out and listen to the 600. If I am working out I take the 246, nice small size and not a brick to take along. When out and around LA and OC it is the 396XT or the 396 at home i will take the the 346XT when out of the truck can hear what is going on or put into tone out and use it along with the county alpha pager.

Yes. The pickup has a dual band amatuer radio with all of the local fire, police, county and so on. Pro 97 normally goes with me as well. Truck's been in the shop for 2 weeks now. Feel naked with out the dual bander. Got the 2 meter in there. We listen all our waking hours here at my place.
