rwier" - The problem you are reporting sounds like it's related to the "LSM" issues (
Simulcast digital distortion - The RadioReference Wiki) that have been reported to be affecting all of us (in my area, Baltimore City and Prince George County Maryland just turned on these types of systems - I used to be able to listen to BCity without any problems but not since they upgraded it - now, it's really hard to listen) -- You mentioned when holding on a talkgroup, things sound good for a bit and them you lose it -- what is the reception like for that same system when just in scan mode?

State = AZ
County = Maricopa
System = RWC (Project 25)
TG Categories selected = 13 (Phoenix Police)
TG Categories ignored = 16 (the rest)
The following steps are automatic, except steps 2, 4, and 12, which are manual.
1) radio off for several minutes or hours
2) turn radio on
3) normal boot up to the "Main Menu"
4) I hit "Scan"
5) radio begins normal scanning
6) almost instantly, radio stops on an active channel
7) reception is loud and clear
8) all colored lights are flashing properly (lol)
9) if tx terminates, normal scanning is resumed
10) steps 6 to 9 above may be repeated as radio traffic requires
11) after some time (~5 minutes a few days ago, ~1.5 minutes now), while stopped on a channel, the reception begins breaking up, scanning resumes, maybe another quick, short, broken up lockon, and then nada
12) need to turn off radio (or change to another scan list) to hear anything
Observations:
Most (maybe all) of the 16 ignored TG Categories above have no problems resembling that described here. Just the TG names that begin with "Phoenix
Police.
When step 11 above occurs, the "big black T" is visible and flickering during the broken up receprion. I thought I remembered the "bbT" dissappearing while locked on an active Trunk channel? (not sure about that)
I have a PSR-500 in my vehicle that is doing a fine job on these PD channels.
I have an HP-1 that is doing poorly on these PD channels, but it is not anywhere near silent.
