You manually select a channel to monitor with the "Browse Objects" feature, in this case, the tactical police division near my house, and the channel is silent for hours. Then I power down, and lock on to the same channel, and they are talking as if they have been all day.

I know it isn't a coincidence because it has happened several times, and there should be no issues with range as this division is near my house.

Any explanations for this?

When you select a channel using the browser feature, press the select button to monitor it.

This is kind of similar to another thread posted some time back. A few people mentioned the radio going silent on them. It happens to me too and I don't understand why. I have found that the pause function is worthless and I have to use the manual button to reliably stop and monitor a talk group.

D.R. Were you referring to the PSR800? If not I jumped the gun. Which type are you using?

No problem, did the select button work for you in browse mode? Oh I see your previous text. That should have done the trick, as far as I know. Perhaps someone with more knowledge will chime in?

Just started happening the same for me, 3 days ago. Only get 1-3 minutes of fantastic coverage of a tough simulcast system. Been pulling my hair out, lol. I'll add a symptom I haven't seen posted, and the others with this prob can check for similar:

After several minutes of silence, I hit the weather button (low right), listen to the forecast (no probs), and go back through "menu > scan", and eureka, I get the same 1-3 minutes of proper reception (great, by the way), before entering the "silent" mode.

Gonna go the the GRE site (if I can find it) and check customer service.

Have you installed all of the CPU, etc. firmware updates to your radio.....?

Yes, but for kicks I did all 4 again (GRE doesn't blink) over the previously installed updates. And, thanks IOWA, no mention of a related problem at GRE support.

Another symptom (for me). This problem is not happening with all Digital Multitask Simulcast Systems.

"drewroberts" - I was having a problem earlier this year that got fixed in the May update - I would browse to a talkgroup in my local system and then hit PLAY/PAUSE to hold and listen to that talkgroup. It would work for a while but then go quiet. I could then repeat my steps and return to listening but then lose it again.

This was fixed in this update:

GRE America, Inc. - Powered By Kayako SupportSuite - I think this:

* Fixed bug in priority talkgroup handling that would cause scanner to "lose" the current talkgroup in the Browse Objects, Play mode

was the fix.

The description of your problem sounds something like this but I could understand if it's something similar but different.

What system are you trying to monitor where you are experiencing this issue?

"rwier" - The problem you are reporting sounds like it's related to the "LSM" issues (Simulcast digital distortion - The RadioReference Wiki) that have been reported to be affecting all of us (in my area, Baltimore City and Prince George County Maryland just turned on these types of systems - I used to be able to listen to BCity without any problems but not since they upgraded it - now, it's really hard to listen) -- You mentioned when holding on a talkgroup, things sound good for a bit and them you lose it -- what is the reception like for that same system when just in scan mode?

I'm trying to figure out if figuring out some of these types of problems is one of the "fun" parts of this hobby.... nah, probably not....

Well, I guess at least we can thank Lindsey for creating this board to allow us to discuss them!

.........................................................

State = AZ
County = Maricopa
System = RWC (Project 25)
TG Categories selected = 13 (Phoenix Police)
TG Categories ignored = 16 (the rest)

The following steps are automatic, except steps 2, 4, and 12, which are manual.

1) radio off for several minutes or hours
2) turn radio on
3) normal boot up to the "Main Menu"
4) I hit "Scan"
5) radio begins normal scanning
6) almost instantly, radio stops on an active channel
7) reception is loud and clear
8) all colored lights are flashing properly (lol)
9) if tx terminates, normal scanning is resumed
10) steps 6 to 9 above may be repeated as radio traffic requires
11) after some time (~5 minutes a few days ago, ~1.5 minutes now), while stopped on a channel, the reception begins breaking up, scanning resumes, maybe another quick, short, broken up lockon, and then nada
12) need to turn off radio (or change to another scan list) to hear anything

Observations:

Most (maybe all) of the 16 ignored TG Categories above have no problems resembling that described here. Just the TG names that begin with "Phoenix
Police.

When step 11 above occurs, the "big black T" is visible and flickering during the broken up receprion. I thought I remembered the "bbT" dissappearing while locked on an active Trunk channel? (not sure about that)

I have a PSR-500 in my vehicle that is doing a fine job on these PD channels.

I have an HP-1 that is doing poorly on these PD channels, but it is not anywhere near silent.

FOLLOW UP

Major misspeak above!

Made a new scanlist out of the previously unused TG Categories above (172 TG's) and so far only an occasional stop on an active channel (should be constant). The only TG's heard on this Test Scanlist were:

1594 WirelessRadT
1590 Test 1590

These smell like radio testing TG's and the tx's "could be" radio testing.

RWC is basicly dead on this 800

I think the problem you are experiencing is different than mine. I am having no issues with bad reception. Reception is great, (the division I monitor is around the corner from my house).
Two nights in a row now I have selected a channel, and after about 45 minutes the radio is silent and will stay that way until I leave the channel and re-select it.
I have an idea for a temporary fix ehich I will try tonight which will be to create a new scanlist and only add the 1 channel I have been focusing on, this way maybe if it isn't locked on and constantly scanning it will keep picking it up.

Makes sense to me but definately not a long term solution.

How many sites aree there in the system you imported? Could it be switching to another site that doesn't have much traffic?

Mike

RR seems to shows 19-20 sites .... are they all programmed into your config?

Might want to try load only the closest site as a test - just something to try.

I've seen cases where I have alot of systems programmed with alot of CCs/frequencies and when I do I miss alot of conversations because the radio is spending alot of time looking for a CC to look into....
