DPL is the same as DCS
Motorola calls its implementation of CTCSS (continuous tone coded squelch system) Private Line or PL. DCS (digital coded squelch) and DPL (Digital Private Line) are both the same. General Electric used CG for Channel Guard and RCA used QC for Quiet Channel.

I’ve been told DCS is the generic term for DPL, not affiliated with any manufacturer or copy written . Motorola created the term PL and by extension, DPL. But I am not aware of Motorola ever objecting to others using PL or DPL. Other manufacturers came up with their own terminology. Probably in an effort to avoid violating copywrite legalities… I can’t swear to this but it’s the story I’ve been told. Verification or Corrections are welcomed.

PL and DPL are registered to Motorola. Even though we commonly use them in the hobby, no other company can use those terms without permission from Motorola.

Just as "Hoover" is a specific brand, but the term is used generically for vacuum.

Thanks for the verification. As for the difference between the two terms which I used to describe the same thing, I believe everyone got my meaning. I’ve never heard “Hoover” used to describe a vacuum cleaner generically but I get your meaning… “Kleenex” is another…

My personal favorite is to run off a "Xerox", but alas let's not creep too far. Some trade names have literally fallen into the public domain, but I think everyone is familiar with what we are talking about here with PL and DCS.

I’ve been told DCS is the generic term for DPL,

Continuous Tone Coded Squelch System (CTCSS) and
Continuous Digital Coded Squelch System (CDCSS)
are the generic EIA terms. Many abbreviate CDCSS as DCS.

Trade names include:
Private Line (PL)
Channel Guard (CG)
Quiet Call (QC)
and others

Most everyone adds a D to the beginning for the digital variant.

Many use PL and DPL since those are the most widely used trade names (like Kleenex or Q-tip).
