Just starting out in this area of DSD, trying to play around with TRBO.

Any tips as to the best linux package to use, and has anyone done it in a VM? I don't have that many computers to use so running it in a VM would be immensely helpful.

This is a choice dictated by preference/familiarity. But for performance, I'd check into that "stripped down router" distro. (forget what the name is). Unless you want to go with lfs (linux from scratch) and build the whole "headache" yourself. As far as VM, I'd first try Xen (opensource (i.e. free)). And no, I haven't tried anything under VM although I'd like to give it a shot. If you want a source of affordable machines, check out the local refurb/used shops if you have them. Otherwise I'd go with gearxs on the web. Pentium IV Dell's starting ~$100. Plus I'd spend an extra $20 or so to jack up the ram. Especially if you want/need a gui environment.

Do you need / want to run Linux and Windows together or instead you want a painless to run Linux without reformatting or partitioning for hard drive?

For the former, download an ISO image file of Ubuntu or your favored distribution. Install Virtual PC 2007 and create a VM that mounts the ISO as the virtual CD. Install within the guest VM.

For the latter: Install WUBI. That will give you Ubuntu running on your Windows file system. No repartitioning.

Well, I have a Macbook Pro and a PC. I don't have space for extra computers lying around to put a linux distro or else I would.

I do have VirtualPC 2007 running the XP portion of Windows 7, so I guess I can simply create another VM in there... that or I also have VMWare Fusion on the Macbook Pro.

There has been discussion about using a flash/thumb drive to load Ubuntu Linux and to run DSD from any computer that allows for boot from such a device. It is another alternative and a simple and easy way to give it a try.

If you have a mac and don't already have parallels you can install ubuntu in that and run dsd in that.

Not much to it.

I've tried to run DSD on Ubuntu under both Virtual Box and Vmware fusion, and it just doesn't work. I suspect the virtual USB interfaces aren't cut out to properly translate the discriminator audio to DSD.

If anyone has experienced any other behavior in virtual environments I'd love to hear from you.

Just the same as Lindsay and others have mentioned, VM just doesn't seem to work for real-time audio processing... In my case, I ran XP as the host and Linux Mint (a variation of Ubuntu) in the VM. Although processor loading was very low on both the host and VM the audio would not decode. The host box was a P4 3.2 GHz with 2GB RAM.

Now, on the other hand I have successfully run DSD on a pure (no VM) Linux Ubuntu distro on a 900 MHz PIII and it worked beautifully.
