Around 5:30 AM Chief 40, Eng. 40, Medic 40 dispatched for a vechile collision at the interection of Admiral Drive and Jennifer Road, about 1/4 mile from the West Annapolis station.

Chief 40 asked that the incident be upgraded to a rescue assigment with entrapment and that an MSP helicopter be requested. PM 35 and 39, truck 40 and squad 38 added.

Eng.3-2 added to handle a landing site for MSP Trooper 1 at Anne Arundel Medical Center helipad which is about 1/4 mile in the opposite direction from Station 40 as the accident.

Addtional ALS unit and second MSP helicopter requested by C40. PM 17 dispatched. Second MSP heicopter cancelled when Trooper 1 said two patients could be transported.

Two priority 2 patients flown out by Trooper 1.

As an aside, is it correct to assume that the difference between a medic unit and a paramedic unit in AACO is a result of the decision to staff some units with one paramedic vs. two?

Yes, for AA County, the designation Medic indicates a single paramedic on board. The other EMT(s) could be EMT-I or CRT's though since AA doesn't have protocols in place for them to act as I's or CRT's and allow the unit to function and be designated as Paramedic. It will only be designated Paramedic if two EMT-P's are riding.

This was a decision made based on attempting to spread ALS level of care further across the county without having enough EMT-P's. It was also based on some study that said most calls can be handled by one EMT-P vs. the need for two. In those cases where a situation requires two EMT-Ps, they just dispatch more units until they get two EMT-Ps (i.e. if the closest is a MEDIC unit they send a 2nd MEDIC unit or a PARAMEDIC unit on initial dispatch). There is more to the story - but I'll leave it at that....
