Oh WTF!

Who are you going to 'emergency communicate' with?

bad idea.

How are you going to provide adequate spacing between antennas? backup power? elevation? convenient control both inside AND outside the vehicle?

Who brought this thread alive again? I was reading an article yesterday on how someone got pulled over and the cop noticed he had a radar gun and all other kinds of equipment such as radios and stuff. Anyway, long story short - he's arrested now. It's not a good idea.

Haha, then you got "undercover police". They throw on the sirens and think they own the road. It's a hazard, and moreover, it's not necessary.

I read in an article here too that during 9/11, people and media relied on whackermobiles to transfer them to locations across town. They were able to talk on "HAM".

You know, I'm a HAM radio operator, and I participate in fighting crime with my local law enforcement agency, but, does it need to go to this extent?

You make a valid point, Some people go over-board, But if you can hide your sirens and lights (and refrain from using them) then what the big issue, I didn't think they were illegal items to have but just to use...........Then again, Who's going to put them in there when they have no intentions of ever using them............

That's what I mean. Are they for show or what? It's a waste of money, but, people MUST have them I guess.

There isn't a big issue at all either, but I don't think it's necessary to have 50 radios in a car. Just carry a portable scanner or something. Not only that, where does the passenger sit .

See, When I get my whacker mobile (just kidding) it will have green strobe lights in the grille and front deck (Which I will have a permit/valid use for) and 2 mobile scanners and maybe my BCT396D. Might also have a dual-band rig hooked up.

I've seen one of them, I think there are something like 20 of them scattered across the country.... The amount of equipment that they managed to shove in there is awesome..

Its not for show. It is to make them feel important and aurthoritative. Simple as that.

When radios and communications become the central focus and overload of an individual's "volunteering" one way or the other, the focus is on the radios, the lights, and the titles, and not on the SERVICE.

Communications are a central and important part of any effective law enforcement, public safety, or coordinated action or authority. But, like a firearm, it is only a small part of the LEO's tools, equipment, and methods. The second the focus is on any of these single items, they are no longer an effective LEO, but a specialist at best, a whacker at worst. And are best served well behind the lines in a support role that requires simple systems. Not elaborate and triple redundant hysteria systems.

The whackpack may have helped out after 9/11 primarily because they were the only ones with any idea how to operate the radios. Trying to coordinate on FRS/GMRS, or even CB would have been anarchy. HAM was a reletivly exclusive domain and allowed comms to get through when everything else was overloaded by everyone else helping out too.

The bottom line is that I am not scared of the whackpack in a 9/11 type disaster. I am scared of them having a hamgasm as I lie on the pavement after getting knocked off my motorcycle and calling all the wrong agencies and blocking the wrong traffic in a complex intersection, or trying to "follow" a road-rage case "until their backup arrives" while fueling the problem, or having the "Fire-police" run after me with their lights blazing in their crappy taurus just because I can lay rubber and shoot flames out the exhaust in 3rd gear in my old pontiac.

Need to be in contact with the authorities in my state?(CT) Carry a cell phone. They work EVERYWHERE here (except whereever I may be standing) Have a more pressing need? Carry a simple 2 band mobile. You dont need to do a moonbounce and call in the mounties.

Extraordinary people excel in extraordinary situations, but they continue their potato-butt mediocrity in normal LEO duties.

Emergency Vehcle

I'm a Ham, and a storm spotter in North Texas. I have outfitted my Hummer H3 for emergencies here. During and after Katrina, 75 Hummers were loaned to La, and the Red Cross. Never know when or where. 73

75 H3s? To do what? Drive the kids to the mall?

You must mean 75 H1s were loaned.;)

You want a good "bug-out" vehicle? Mid-90s Toyota Land Cruiser, or a 4runner from the same vintage with the 22re motor. Bring on Nuclear Winter or Zombie Invasion. I'm ready! And the only radio i'll need is the stock one so I can listen to Iron Maiden while I barge my way over the veldt to personal freedom and safety.

Join an angency as a volunteer. If they let you have your wacker lights then so be it. If they do not, then should you have them in the first place?

You obviously dont know about H3's. I had a 78 FJ40, great truck, mileage sucked. H1's are no longer , H2's and H3's have very close spects for off roading. H3's and H2's were used before, during, and after Katrina to deliver meds etc.

I lived in Wichita Falls Tx during the 1979 tornado. My FJ got me around. Back then cb radio was king, good combo.

I hate using the wacker word... but honestly why is the point in spending $150 to $1000 on lights and sirens if your never going to use them!!! Yea its cool to have the airhorn and PA... but guess what... whelen makes it for 100 bucks go get that instead. Dont get all the doo-dads to show off to your friends, if you want to make something cool go buy a P-O-S truck and fix it up and go off-roading.

Yes, I spot with a group of Sky Warn fellas and a local television station. I had certification from the red cross in damage assessment, but that was in Altus OK when I first started out. I am also a member of SATERN.
