Hello everyone!
What are the differences between all the NYPD Citywide feeds?
Thanks!

Also, when listening to local precinct feeds at night I hear the units being called "45 Adam midnight". What does that mean? Also they'll call some units something that sounds like "45 Adam for by". What does that mean?
Thanks!

At shift change, there may be two 45 Adam units on the air...one 4-12 shift and one midnight shift.

So what am I hearing when they say "4 by"?
4 by 4 is probably in response to a radio check. On a scale of 1-5, 1 being the worst and 5 being the best. The first number is audio level and the second number is clarity. For example, "45 Adam, Radio Check" "Loud and clear" would be "5 x 5" ... "4 x 4" is pretty good, but not the best volume level or clarity.

A unit that is referred to as “Four by four” means, I believe, an SUV with all-wheel, or what used to be known as, four wheel drive. This is to distinguish it from a regular NYPD patrol car. The 4 x 4 vehicles will be deployed, if needed, in a situation where a normal patrol vehicle won’t operate as well.
I could be wrong, but listen closely for the context!

Nope; already answered. Nothing vehicle related.

The "5x5, etc" thing has EVERYTHING to do with radio reception, and absolutely NOTHING to do with any type of vehicle.

I couldn't believe I was reading that about the vehicles.

The "5x5" thing goes back to military radios used in WWII, and can still be heard in some of those old black-and-white WWII movies made back then. Obviously, that carried over to when the NYPD finally got a two-way radio system in the late 1940s, early '50s (the original radio system was a one-way system over AM radio).

In any event, you won't hear "5x5" much anymore anyway, as the entire NYPD goes "dark".

No, it’s not a reception report at all. For instance, dispatch for the division that covers the 20, 23 and CP precincts will often (or did when I still lived in NYC in 2012) transmit something such as “Central Park 4x4, check on a disturbance by the Bethesda Fountain; two males harassing a group of tourists…”
In other words, a specific vehicle. Sometimes reduced to “4 by.”
I will start monitoring on that division regularly on Broadcastify for the next few weeks, but I know “4x4” is NOT a signal report in this instance. Context is everything! I stand by my assertion.
Dude read a few reply’s up I answered the question. “4 by” refers to a 4 to 12 unit. Period end of story.
