I'm looking to buy an external speaker for my Pro-97. I'm interested in the RadioShack scanner speakers.

What's the difference between the RS amplified speaker 21-541 and the normal speaker 21-549 ?

Is the audio quality better on the external speaker than on the scanner speaker'?

Does the external speaker include the scanners humming sound?

Any ideas please. Thank You.

If it's like the -95, the audio level on the external output is greatly reduced so that one would not blow their eardrums out while wearing headphones. The amplified speaker would work better in that case.

The amplified speaker would give you a louder volume than that of the non amplified. I use the non-amplified speaker with my yaesu ft8800R in my car. The volume from that is pretty good. the only time it isn't enough is sometimes on the interstate with the windows down. But other than that the sound is great and doesn't seem to distort at full volume. Not sure how it would react with a handheld scanner. But I've been satisfied with it for my use.

If you are getting a "humming sound" from your PRO-97, my guess is you are using a wall wart for power. Many wall warts are poorly filtered, producing AC "hum" from the speaker.
There are two solutions:
1) Use a well filtered power supply.
2) Do not use an AC power supply, use a charger and two sets of batteries.
In my opinion, 2) is the best solution since it is easy to change batteries and you avoid the possibility of damage to the scanner because of a power surge.

The energizer rechargeable batteries have worked well for me with my scanners and other applications. They have a 15 minute charger which is very convenient. Might be something to check out.

Yes, I have Energizer Rechargable 2500mah but i still use my AC power when the scanner is on my desk to conserve the batteries. And its not really a "humm" its more of a siss like in the background of transmitions..i think its the natural scanner's computer working sound.

I use a Midland non amplified speaker with my Pro 93. It makes a world of difference. The speaker built into the scanner just doesn't compare to the external speaker.

The frying you speak of could be coming from a number of sources. However, your explination is likely the culprit.

After reading it, I decided to do my own test with all of my own scanners here, and found that actually, they ALL do it, with varying intensities. Oddly enough, the Pro-2055 was worst out of the group, and even more interesting - the 2055 is the Pro-97's big brother. :)

I have monitores some agencies and frequencies where there was considerable more "frying" than others, even with a full quieting, 100% signal. It's just in the scanner I guess. :)
