I bought a length of Times Microwave LMR400 UF. This does not have the solid center conductor to my knowledge. I also bought the Times 3190-2590 EZ connectors. The installation videos I’ve watched have not shown the center conductor being crimped for this connector. Will my stranded center conductor work with the male (N) EZ connector?

No.

If you look at the LMR-400-UF compatibility sheet it specifically leaves out all EZ connectors and recommends TC connectors. Personally, I use RF Industries RFN-1006-3I and RFN-1028-I for anything LMR-400 related.

Yeah, the EZ connectors are for the solid center conductors/non-UF cable. The installation requires chamfering the end of the center conductor before installation. The installation tool kit comes with a specific tool for that, but you could do it with a fine file.

Yup, you can’t push a stranded center conductor into the captive fingers inside the EZ connector. I wish this question would have come up before you got the stuff. The EZ series connectors are still superior to any other brand or part# but only on solid center conductor coax.

I’ve only found the SC-400-NM to work with the stranded cable. Do y’all know if anyone happens to make something compatible besides Times?

I don’t have any in front of me but have many different brands of N male crimp connectors that fit LMR400 (all types) 9913, RG-8, RG213, etc. They are all silver plated with gold plated solder on center pins. Some are Chinese off eBay and only cost a few $$ but work fine for most things below 1GHz.

It just takes a lot of time to properly solder the center pin on and if you make critical cables like I do needing to pass sweep tests through 6.5GHz you will probably install and cut off several before you get one to pass spec. The EZ series installs in about 1 minute and always passes sweep tests past 6.5GHz. A child can put those on with no mistakes and I wish they made an equivalent for stranded center conductor.

It appears the center pin can be crimped on the SC-400-NM or am I off on that? I don’t mind crimping. I just want it to be reliable and work to its rating.

Is there a specific connector for the stranded bare copper center conductor anyone would recommend?

I’ve used these silver plated versions for full duplex stuff and the dealer has proven to be reliable.

I’ve also bought from China when I was not in a hurry and the connectors were as good as any other but not silver plated.

Nice. You think the stranded version (UF) would do okay in there?

Yes. You just have to make sure the LMR or any coax is stripped properly so the center pin is recessed the proper amount when the connector is assembled, which I think is about .030. For these cheaper connectors I usually strip then assemble the connector with center pin before soldering so I know the strip dimensions are good. LMR has an easy to destroy foam dialectic and you have to solder the center pin very quickly to avoid a mess.

Thank you. I know some decent avionics techs and I’ll carry the cable into work and get them to help me as well.
