Not to get us off-track on this thread, but the "red signal" you're referring to has to do with the BNSF railroad's crossing with us.
Strangely-enough, we are the PRIMARY railroad at that crossing - yes, the small FEVR has precedence over the BIG BNSF when it comes to matters of the crossing. In 1906, it was the CB&Q (later BN, then BNSF) that crossed the Fremont Elkhorn and Missouri Valley (F&EMV) railroad and they've had to maintain that crossing since then.
That crossing is known as an "Automatic Interlocking", which uses bulky relay logic to grant permission, via colored light signals, to proceed through the crossing. It works just like a traffic light would, only this one has many safeguards built-in and detects, via the rails, which section of track the approaching train(s) is/are on.
