When you're close enough to watch, as well as scan, which plane just looks best to you? Having seen DHL 785 (heavy) land this morning, it still looks great to me (DC-8-73F). Since there are no more Concordes flying I'd say those stretch DC-8's are my pick. What's yours??

It's been a long time, but my favorite of all time is watching the landing approach of a C-5A as it passes directly above, which replaced the watching the landing approach of a B-52 passing directly above.

To this day my favorite plane to watch was the Vickers VC-10, only BOAC/BA and The RAF used them. The RAF still does.
Used to go over to JFK on the weekends to watch it land and or takeoff.

Once, at an airshow, a Nimrod gave a demonstration of its abilities. The crew performed low-level anti-submarine search. As the demonstration ended, the announcer asked the crowd if they enjoyed the show. Of course, as the cheering and clapping erupted. But, there was silence when the announcer said that the entire performance was within the fence line of the airfield. So, this is another of the "favorites". A great looking airplane with interesting abilities. As for the frequencies used, just the assigned air boss VHF.

One of mine too is the C-5. When I was in the military stationed in Okinawa, I used to watch it land all of the time. But on the other hand, the SR-71 (called the Habu in Okinawa), there's nothing like it. Too bad it's not in service anymore.

I was thinking more of airliners when I posted this. Having lived near JFK for years, I saw many types. I used to love going to Long Beach on Sunday morning for a Concorde triple header. no more though!

I love to watch the 757s that some football teams bring into CHO trying to land and takeoff on a 6000 ft runway. One time it looked like somebody using a leaf blower with all the dust it was blowing off the runway!

Avro Vulcan

I'd say one of my favorites is the RAF Avro Vulcan bomber, long since retired. I grew up in Omaha, Nebraska and watched the Vulcans of the RAF Strike Command detachment at Offutt AFB come and go for years. I was later stationed at Offutt when the Vulcans were retired (for the first time). The airshow put on by the Brits was awesome, but the practice the day before the event was even better. The primary demonstration pilot executed a vertical climb over the runway, and pulled the huge delta-winged bomber inverted over the airfield. He then rolled wings level and completed the demo. He was grounded by the squadron leader because of some prohibition on flying a designated heavy aircraft inverted, or some such nonsense. Oh yeah, the only airplane I can remember that was louder than a Vulcan was the B-58 Hustler (also a beautiful plane to watch.)

I never saw a B-58 up close, but I remember the double clap thunder that did wonders to windows, made trees shake, and my dad do a forward somersalt off the roof onto the prickly shrubs below (he wasn't hurt, but didn't like my, "Neat, do it again," statement.), as they dashed for training sites along/above the Gulf of Mexico.

A C-5 is impressive Seen many C-5 passing overhead at Ft.Hood. Some seemed like they were going to fall out of the sky.

An A-10 wart hog on a weapons range = "Inbound, Weapons Hot"

F-15's screaming above, about 1500 feet off of the ground.

Military Aircraft as a whole is awesome.

Nothing better than watching a DC-3/C-47 come up on the mains and hearing those gorgeous old Pratt & Whitneys roar as she climbs out.

So many to choose from... I'd have to say the most impressive and unique sight, would be how a F117 looks while orbiting at fairly low level across a distant desert valley. I've seen it numerous times and will miss it when it's gone. Nothing looks quite as surreal.

I have to vote for the MD series planes! I loved watching the Reno Air MD-80 and MD-92'sas they flew into Reno. I also love the Brazilias and Do-328's.

This is purely nostalgic for me. My choice is the Vickers Viscount.

It was the first plane I ever flew in. I flew in it a few times when I would spend my holidays, away from my home just outside Boston, in Nova Scotia. 50 minutes from Boston to Yarmouth. Way too short a time to suit me back then.

There was no mistaking the engine sounds as it would either be landing or taking off from Logan Airport and flying just over our house. While I enjoy watching pretty much all aircraft, this one is by far my most favorite.

In no order:

DC-10 / MD-11
727
DC-9
757

Haven't had much of a chance seeing any 747's come in for a lander :(
