New to the group hope this is in the right spot if not sorry.
I work for a city agency that uses the cheapest of radios ....... I need a hand held scanner to basically monitor FDNY Bronx fire ground, Bronx Dispatch, City wide and basically that’s it.

what is a great hand held scanner thats clear and either can be pre programmed or easily programmed.

if anyone has Bronx experience scanner frequency’s in a lot of areas can be quite choppy at times.
Thanks I’m advance

Uniden has 2 hand held scanners that are very basic and would meet your needs frequency wise.
SR30C (replaces the BC75XLT) no alpha tagging.
BC125AT, has alpha tagging.
Two things I don't like about either scanner is, they use only 2 AA batteries and have small speakers
which=short battery life and not so great audio.

Since your listening interest is within a very limited frequency range, have you considered looking into buying
one of those cheap import 2 way hand held or maybe a used commercial grade hand held programmed for
receive only? You'll get better battery life and better audio.

Thanks for the quick response. What would you buy if You wanted extremely good time the best ? I do rely on this for response. An FDNY captain offered me a house radio but I don’t want the head ache of a stolen radio or jam him up. So what do you recommend

If you're only looking to monitor a few channels. I would look for a S split HT750 and program the channels as RX only incase it gets lost.

Based on your needs, I personally would go with a used Motorola radio.

As the above poster said, look for the correct band split (450-512 MHz).
Don't rely totally on the listing for the frequency spread. Look for a photo of
the model number that's inside the radio and cross reference that with the
manufacturer, to make sure it's the correct band split.

There are a lot of used hand helds out there for sale on a popular auction site
that you could probably get for $125-$150. You'll want the package to include
radio, battery (w/clip), charger, antenna and programming. Check the sellers
feedback and look for high sales with little to no negative feedback.

For programming, you'll need the receive frequency(s) with PL/DPL tone.
If the radio has a scan option, communicate with the seller about how you
would like that set up. You should think about adding the other borough's
and/or other frequencies you may want to listen to within 450-512 MHz,
depending on the channel capability and programming limit set by the
seller.

If you find a radio you like but there are little to no accessories, you can find
those things a la carte on the auction site, including programming. Just don't
go over budget because buying a la carte can add up.

You SHOULD jam him up! That's disgraceful. I could add a few expletives about this, too. A call to the Fire Marshal's office will suffice.

Lol thank god you don’t know what I do or know who I’m taking about. Lol the radio that was offers was a retired radio that is no longer slowed to be used by FDNY lol but thanks for being a true tough guy. Lol

If it's a retired radio that's just going to get junked anyway, then why not take him up on it? I'm a fellow NYC taxpayer and it's ok with me! ;)
