Fire and Police Notifications (Paging)

Does any know of anyway of getting police and fire notifications besides fnnm and ipn. I heard there is some twitter thing

I am not sure if this is what you are looking for, but I use http://www.nixle.com to receive email & text message updates ofmy area. I can pick & choose the departments I wish to get updates on.

That's not a police / fire notification system, just a public safety sort of generic alert mode.
