Wow. Usually the truck occupants walk away from things like that. Being that the trucks have so much weight and momentum behind them, unless they hit something their own size it's usually only the smaller vehicle occupants that get the brunt of it. Perhaps he wasn't buckled up (I didn't see any mention of it in the story)?

We had a similar incident here in Traverse City about 2 years ago...unfortunately at the fault of the engine driver. He ran a red light doing close to 50 and t-boned a small SUV, killing a woman and child inside and severely injuring the SUV driver. The occupants of the engine walked away without scratches.

A lot of the equipment in Detroit is either very old, or often in a state of disrepair. My guess would be the truck didn't even have seat-belts, or they were malfunctioning. Very sad.

It's called failing to yield the right of way for emerg. vehicles. To much personal agenda going on in domestic vehicles these days. The me, me, me...........I, I, I syndrome. !!

That SUV must have hit the truck just right.

My heartfelt condolences go out to the family of the fallen firefighter.

Pardon me for invading on the MI forum, but..

1. I kind of flinched when I read "Firefighter killed racing to blaze" (my emphasis) ... but I'll have to leave it at that.

2. The SUV was doing over 70 in a residential area? What's the posted speed?

3. There was a series of articles reprinted on Firehouse Magazine's website years ago about Detroit's deplorable apparatus fleet and poor conditions in their halls, in terms of technology. I too share the opinion that the truck could have been in less than perfect shape.

Regardless of the situation, there needs to be condolences paid to FF Torkos' family and friends.

Engine 17 involved in the accident is a 1998 HME/Ferrara. My thoughts and prayers to the members of Engine 17 and the entire Detroit Fire Dept.

I thought the same thing! It's like the Detroit Free Press was implying the fire engine was driving too fast. I even thought about using a different header other than theirs, but I've been criticized for that in the past, so I left it as printed.

This story is so very sad.

It seems these days that our cops, firemen, ems people and the dispatchers who send them where they need to be are so often maligned in the media and by the public they serve; people sometimes forget that they are real folks who perform an often thankless job for very little money.

2) 35-40 in that area depending on the side of the intersection they came in on.

Also driver of SUV is DOA.

Both front seat FF's were ejected and the one was run over by the Rig and killed.

Lets Just Chill & Say A Prayer!!!!

First Of All We All Need To Say A Prayer For Engineer Joseph Torkos & His Family, He Was My Driver A Few Years Ago And One Of The Best In The Department. We All Need To Chill On All Of The Speculation As To What Condition The Rig Was In, It Was A 98 Kme.

What We Do Know Is That A Life Was Lost And Another Is Hanging On In Critical Condition, There Is Not Much You Can Do No Matter What Shape Your Rig Is In, When A Suv Traveling At 80 Mph Hit Your Fire Truck Going 45 Mph.

Motorist Just Dont Have Respect For Emergency Vehicles, Every Run We Go On There Are Near Misses With Civilian Autos, Its Like Beat The Train To The Crossing, The Rigs Just Dont Stop Like Cars, Also People Try To Drive Around Us As We Try To Back Into Quarters. Lets All Say A Prayer For Lt Walter Grysko To Pull Through, And Let The Investigation Take Its Course Before We Reach Judgement

The driver of the SUV, Robert Waller III was on parole for robbery, had cocaine on him, a gun, and no driver's license.

My first thought apon hearing the news: AS*HOLE SUV driver. must have been going Extreamly fast. -- THOUGHT CONFIRMED
My second thought: Probably a SH*TBALL too. -- THOUGHT CONFIRMED

At least he is a DEAD SH*TBALL - AS*HOLE.

It is a crying shame he had to take a firefighter with him.

Joseph Torkos - Rest In Peace.

Robert Waller - Rot in Hell.

You are SO RIGHT ABOUT MOTORISTS NOT HAVING RESPECT FOR EMERGENCY VECHICLES!! I find that even down here in semi rural Southwest Michigan that I am always the first person that stops for a Emergency Vechicles and sometimes the only person.

It a practice I learned from my late Father, who was a Niles City Firemen from 1956 to 1981!
