Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Firmware is completely separate from the cloning software and would need to be obtained as such.

I purchased what I was told included Firmware. The picture I was sent said Firmware v4.6.4. When I received the disc the word Firmware was missing, but the v4.6.4 remained. I contacted the dealer and he said the disc does include the Firmware. It doesn’t.
I am not sure on the Procedure to load Firmware. Is there a manual that will cover it?

As I recall, there weren't too many steps. When I opened the firmware folder (It had a name that started with EX) and ran the file, there was a "COM PORT" tab at the top of the new window. Click on that Com Port tab and set the Com Port number for your program cable. Then follow the on-screen directions and it automatically writes the firmware to the radio.

Vern has is right. Once you open the firmware loader software, connect the radio, select appropriate COM Port and then select "OK" to begin. Pretty easy and straight forward.

Quick question: When upgrading firmware by several versions, should I do it in increments, or (for example) can I go directly from 3.1 to 5.2? For some reason I can't find any official documentation about the firmware upgrade process.

Hi Vern,
Thanks for posting the link to mega.nz, I downloaded the Icom firmware for the Railroad F5061.
However there is a file named "EX_2986Q_RR_v4.6.6" which is showing up as a "6" filetype. Well I know that can't be correct, according to Google, a type 6 file is a UNIX file and is plain text. I am assuming that Windows is using the .6 as the extension.

I cannot find anyway to make the EX_2986Q_rr_v4.6.6 behave like a .zip file.

Do you know of anywhere else to get the v4.6.6 RR firmware for the F5061D, or should I just install the v5.3 firmware?
I have the cloning software for v5.3.
I have a F3261DT with the v4.6.6 RR firmware, that is why I am asking.

Thank You!

Best regards!

Michael

If you use the firmware loader (.exe) and point it to the RR fike, will it load it?
Firmware files aren't usually executable... you need to use a loader application to load a firmware file via the designated comport to the radio.

The F5061D had v4.6 Firmware when I purchased it, the cloning software I have is v5.3 and it would not load the codeplug onto the radio.

Using a Windows 7 laptop and the Icom OPC1122U cable, I succeeded in getting the dreaded CLONE NG message when I tried to install the v4.6.4 RR firmware.

Tried again using the v4.6.5 RR Firmware, same result.

Loaded the v5.4 Firmware and "all is right with the world again", it doesn't make sense that the RR Firmware wouldn't work. Maybe a "secret" jumper or something needs to be set on the radio?

I am just glad that I didn't "Brick It"!

Using the v5.4 firmware and the v5.3 cloning software, I am able to read and write to the F5061D with no issues.

This radio is intended for use in my motorcar on railroad excursions, so the NARCOA frequencies are more important anyway. I also want to use the radio to monitor the NS Harrisburg Line, about 4 miles from my house.

Other than the direct channel entry using the keypad, does anyone know the differences between the RR and non-RR firmware? I will compare the v4.6.6 RR software side-by-side with the v5.3 software when I get a chance.

Best Regards!

Michael
