Upon passing my Extra exam, the local club loaned me some equipment donated to them. I have yet to set it up as I have no idea how to put the antenna (or what I assume is meant to be an antenna) up and where to put it. The transceiver is an Alinco D100t I believe and what I assume is the antenna is two lengths of coax merged into a male PL-259 connector. I live in a small-ish apartment so outdoor antennas aren't feasible and the walls are pretty thin here so MPE is also a concern.

Suggestions are welcome, especially in regards to software to help find/calculate field strengths and other things.

Well, if you are antenna restricted you can string that wire antenna (I am assuming it's a dipole) up around the edges of the room as high as you can. The PL259 connector centered above the radio, then tack it up close to the ceiling. It's a pretty simple and basic antenna and you can be creative with your positioning, try out different configurations, etc., see what works.

Nice club you have there, that they would give you a starter kit.

Have fun with it!

I think your best bet is to get some more advice about the antenna and equipment loaned to you. I've got a feeling that isf you ask, you will have more advice than you'll know what to do with. ;)

W5lz is correct. The very same folks who volunteered this equipment would be the ones to ask for instructions. They obviously knew you were brand new to the hobby and just meeting the local ham radio club. They loaned you as good starter kit. I would imagine one question will generate a response, then stand back.

There are two basic ways of finding out something you don't know. One is by asking. The other is by making all the mistakes that will eventually lead you to the correct answer. I've found that asking is the bestest way of doing it. Not all of them, but I've made a bunch of those mistakes! Don't go there unless you just have to... for some weird reason.
