Okay so I couldn't find any previous threads about fort Knox. I know that they have a new system I've been monitoring it for the past few days it is now part of the larger DOD system used at all major military bases. But I have a question about talk group19000 this supposed to be fire department dispatch but the only thing I ever seem to hear on it is like a quarter second burst of what would sound like encrypted data and then basically a fast busy phone tone anybody got any clues?

Without actually hearing it, my guess would be two tone fire paging.

I agree with @N1GAW that it is more than likely two-tone fire paging. If your able to record and upload a clip of the tones It would help in determining what it is.

Also is the old Fort Knox system in use or is it offline completely? It seems that almost all frequencies are on the new system and last time I was down that way I only got the C51B0 WACN and not the 46FF9.

Are you using a GRE/Whistler scanner? Maybe you have it set to play the busy tone on encrypted transmissions.

Fast busy is not two tone.

As far as I know the old system is dead

Yes I am using a whistler WS 1080 I guess I need to go back and look at the software I didn't realize you could set it to do the fast busy on encrypted transmissions any clue where to look in the software

Maybe under "Advanced Fearures", then "Audio Options"? Or something like that I believe.

I did some overnight logging for Fort Knox and listening today.

Sites 5, 6 and 7 seem to be the only ones having traffic. No hits on anything "old". Of course its Sunday and little happens on Sunday.

I just heard a gas leak dispatched. The alert part happened on19021, FTK FD FR. Units were told to operate on FR 1, or FTK FD FR 1 (19014). I did not hear any traffic on talkgroup 1900 as part of this incident. I'm there are many potential things the quarter second burst could be. Perhaps some method of alerting receivers at certain places, such as the MP station, for certain types of incidents. More monitoring may end up telling the correct story.

Wouldn't you know it... Five minutes after writing the above, I heard some voice traffic on the 19000 talkgroup. It was like "3 Alpha for a radio check". I presume 3A is a portable on Engine 3, who was dispatched to the gas leak. About half of that traffic was noted on Site 5 and the other half on Site 7.

Does anyone know if this is a linked system, such that any traffic on Site 5 is also carried on Site 6 and Site 7? I hear all three where I am in southern Jefferson County and wonder if it is necessary to have all three on or will just one do?

While I don't know how this particular system is setup, generally traffic on a talk group will play on a site when a radio on that talk group affiliates to it and will not play if no radios are affiliated. They can set certain talk groups to play all the time and others to never play but you would need to know how the system is setup to know what can and can not play on a site.

Saying that, it would probably be best to monitor all the sites you can receive until you can get an understanding of what plays on what. You can figure this out by monitoring over time.

Given the land mass that Fort Knox occupies I see why they use multiple sites. I was just wondering whether all traffic is "forced" on to all sites or whether it is as you describe - only active if a radio is affiliated with a site.

Thanks for the reply!

If they use the same radio designators as at other military facilities I've monitored, Alpha would be the OIC. Bravo is the engineer (aka driver/pump operator), Charlie and Delta are the backseat firefighters (pretty sure Charlie is the one behind the driver and Delta the one behind the OIC).

Most likely the system is set up so that a talkgroup is only active when a radio is affiliated with the site. It's possible that a few talkgroups may be set to be live at all sites all the time, but generally this is a feature only used for one or two really super-critical talkgroups; too many talkgroups set up that way and every site would get overloaded pretty quickly.
