Hi There,

I’m in Ottawa and I guess you could say I’m getting back into the frequency scanning fun.

I remember I used to be able to listen to the Ottawa Paramedics but for some reason I can’t seem to pick them up. I’m using a
Baofeng UV-5R scanner/radio.

I included a link to the page.
Also, what does “DEC” “HEX” all mean… ? How could I listen to those? What unit would I need?

Many Thanks,
Art

Baofeng will not do trunked systems, which OI think you are showing (very hard to read) might not even have frequency coverage.

Baofeng UV-5R scanner/radio in the true sense is not a scanner, it is a dual band Amateur Radio (ham radio).
It will scan freqs but not what you are trying to scan. The systems in Ottawa are P1,P2,NXDN, and others. The radio mentioned will only monitor ANALOG signals.

Sorry but you need to buy a real scanner capable of Digital signal decoding. Nothing can decode an encrypted radio signal.

The Baofeng radios are NOT scanners, they can not monitor the 700/800 MHZ freeqs and P25 Phase 2 systems (or any digital systems), the EMS talkgroups are encrypted and no scanner will allow you to monitor them.

The DEC/HEX are the talkgroups on the trunked system.

You will find that a lot has changed since you were last in the scanning scene. Today most services are trunked. The vast majority are P25 either Phase I or Phase II. Most scanners cover these modes right out of the box. The other main modes are DMR/TRBO or NXDN. Again most main brands of scanners can be upgraded to these modes.

The general process for scanning services is to program in the local site for the system your interested in. Once that is done you create a Scan List of the talkgroups (TG) your interested in. This is where the DEC and HEX comes in. The TG value is a number. Basically the scanner waits until it hears that number. When it does it goes to the freq that the number is using.

And as mentioned nothing decodes encrypted transmissions. That too is a sad reality of modern scanning. There are still a lot of very interesting things to listen to.
