• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

I was actually pretty surprised how well this radio does on UHF, I’m a good bit away from the repeaters and it’s clear as a bell

I was going to add that if you add the CTCSS or DPL you can get rid of the squelch tails (if you so desire) but a quick check shows me the LACFD Blue channels are mainly CSQ. I have a G3 and G5 here on the East Coast and have been very pleased with their performance on VHF-Hi, 400Mhz and 700-800mHz on both digital and analog. Portability, durability, battery life and clear audio in high noise environments are some of my favorite qualities of these units. I especially like the ability on the tone outs to to record and instantly play back the dispatch I might have missed. Certainly the Unications lack the versatility of regular scanners (of which I have several) but my Unications are my choice for on the go monitoring and for Tone Dispatch Alerting when not actively monitoring.

Using my G5 ( Blue banded supplied stubby antenna), I monitor a small UHF , DMR system with great sounds and decoding.

It doesn’t use the stubby for VHF/UHF from what I gather it uses an internal antenna or did they change it?

On the G5 the blue stubby is for 700-800 band reception, while there is an internal antenna for VHF high.
On the G3 the green stubby is for 400 band (UHF) reception and the VHF high band is via the internal antenna.

sadly, it's better than that sds 200 with an outboard antenna.
I have a SDS200 with one of the Larsen Tri Banders, it’s not that bad, I listen to Rail a lot and it works pretty well, but it’s a scanner, it’ll never outdo a dedicated commercial radio in most cases

I merely mentioned the blue banded antenna to forward the effectiveness of the G5 internal antenna. I realize that G5 uses internal antenna for the UHF /VHF bands.
Thanks,
