Can someone direct me to an article or reference point for a simple
explanation of systems, sites, groups, quick keys and profiles, with good
examples for each? I have several bcd996t's that I have deleted the factory
freqs from, and have manually programmed each one with both conventional
and trunking towns as well as one digital trunk fd. Everything works fine. But
I still don't fully grasp the difference between a site, system, group et al.

I like to think of Systems as Folders that contain groups(sub folders). In a bank scanner, systems would be banks, but no groups in the bank to allow you to better organize and not waste memory with unused channels in bank.
A conventional system might be County. In the folder called County, there are 3 groups(sub folders): PD, FD, and EMS. Each of these 3 folders contain various frequencies for the PD, FD, & EMS. Both Systems and groups should be assigned a quick key (think bank key) that can turn on and off each of them quickly(easily). You should get software. It will help you visualize, but it will also greatly simplify the programming. Some software can actually download an entire county from this site and set up all these groups and folders for you. This is especially helpful for trunking systems, as it will set up all the trunking system parameters, frequencies, and the TGID's Just noticed you asked about profile, so I am assuming you have ARC software already. ARC software can do auto downloads as I mentioned. A profile is simply a list of all the systems and groups you want in the scanner. You might have a profile for your county, and another one for surrounding counties. I think they are more useful if you travel, as you can set up various profiles for the areas you pass through.

Getting there

Thanks Clint and Attackron. I'm also ex-Navy. What was bothering me was after I
downloaded from RR using the ARC software for a conventional system, it made the county the system, the towns as the groups and then the various departments as sub groups. What I want to do is make the county the system then the different departments (PD, FD, etc) as the groups, then their frequencies. Takes more manipulation but I'm slowly getting it. The articles you guys mentioned are very good. Thanks
