SDS100/SDS200: Garmin GPS 18x PC for SDS100

I have found a number of posts on this topic, but they are all closed without an answer. I have a Garmin GPS 18X PC from my 996XT that I would like to use for the SDS100 on an upcoming road trip. The data sheet from Garmin indicates that the output to the existing DB9 is a 5v signal. Assuming I build an adapter from DB9 to USB-mini can I use this on the SDS100?
