GLENWOOD SPRINGS, Colo. — One man was seriously injured when falling rocks struck two vehicles in Glenwood Canyon on Sunday, closing westbound Interstate 70 for 1 1/2 hours.
A 2004 Ryder truck driven by Nathan S. Holmes, 36, of Gypsum, was westbound on Interstate 70 west of the Hanging Lake exit when numerous large boulders fell from the mountainside and struck the cab at about 5:30 p.m., according to a press release from the Colorado State Patrol. After being hit, the truck travelled for 140 feet, coming to rest against the median barrier.
Holmes sustained a broken neck and a large laceration to the top of his head. He was transported to Valley View Hospital, where he is listed in conscious and stable condition.
The passenger, April M. Logan, 36, of Gypsum, was uninjured.
Kevin O'Brien, 54, of New Castle was driving a 2005 Toyota Rav 4 behind the Ryder truck, and his vehicle was also struck by boulders. O'Brien made a controlled stop on the left shoulder behind the Ryder truck. O'Brien and his wife, Carole O'Brien, received minor cuts.
